The Day of the Jackal: Episode 1
November 8, 2024 12:35 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe
The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee. He soon meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer who tracks him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe.
Glad to see Lashana Lynch getting work, but I hope her character has some room for her swagger and verve--the "straight guy" in these scenarios often doesn't.

The reviews of this I've been seeing have been tepid at best. I seem to be one of the few people who actually likes Eddie Redmayne, but it'll have to wait until I see a convincing reason to watch it.

Having seen what's out so far, I would say you're probably not going to get your wish. She seems to be used as a foil for Redmayne in certain ways, which doesn't leave a lot of room for departure from the -- as you put it -- "straight guy" role.

I enjoyed the first episode. I thought Eddie was just fine at recreating the Edward Fox vibe of the first film.

I'm struggling to like this. A big part of this is that Bianca's job description seems to be basically: anything and everything any part of the police, intelligence services and military would ever be called upon to do, she can and will do it instead. That would be fine if this was a James Bond spy-fantasy, but it's also aspiring to be a fine and precise technical thriller. Pick a lane...
