When The Machine spits out the number of a 6-month-old baby, Reese and Finch turn into overly protective parents.

An episode focused on parentss and their children.

Crime lord Gianni Moretti (Mark Margolis), father of Elias, is being released from prison. (Moretti first appears in s1 e9 "Get Carter.") Carter is watching the prison as Moretti is released. Reese gets into her car and she tells him she’s been authorized to put Moretti into Witness Protection in return for his testifying against his son, Elias.

Finch calls Reese to say that they have a new number, Leila Smith, and her SSN was issued just two months ago. He figures that she’s either a new citizen or involved in identify fraud. Finch has pulled up her work address and leaves to check it out, reminding Reese that even with Moretti, the numbers won’t wait. Meanwhile Carter offers protection to Moretti who dismisses her offer.

Arriving at the clinic, Finch realizes that the newest POI is a baby, Leila Smith. Leila is a safe haven baby awaiting adoption. He calls Reese to consult, but he's busy protecting Moretti from a hit. Afterwards he calls Finch to check in, and Finch confesses to doing something rash (revealing Leila with him in the Library).

Reese takes his turn watching Leila while Finch arranges a meeting with Carter while he shops for baby supplies. She soon realizes that Finch took Leila and he explains what happened. Finch asks her to find out who Leila's parents are.

Finch and Reese think Bradley, son of construction magnate Adnan Petrosian, is the father of baby Leila. They also realize that Claudia Cruz (who died in a house fire just a few days prior) was the mother. They figure she was murdered because she wanted to keep baby Leila and the family wanted to avoid scandal as well as child support payments.

While Finch poses as a Family Service representative to meet with Claudia's parents, Reese follows Bradley and discovers that Bradley's lover is a man. Meanwhile baby Leila is abducted.

Carter finds a lamp involved with Claudia's death and has it examined for fingerprints, which gets a hit. Reese confronts Adnan about Leila, who reveals he is Leila's father, but didn't take the baby. Nicola, his wife, admits that she is behind the abduction but she doesn't know what the men she hired did with the baby, simply that she is gone.

Reese attempts to find Leila, but can't and finally asks finch to give him the phone to Elias. Finch warns him about consequences, but Reese says he has no other choice. A desperate Reese explains to Elias that baby Leila's history is identical to his own. The crime lord points out that he survived, but Reese says that Leila is only six months old and doesn’t have the same chance. He warns Elias that if criminals start going after children, then there’s no rules and Elias has no control. Elias concedes the matter.

While Elias tells Reese where to get Leila, he then traps Reese and Leila in order to get the location of Moretti. John holds out for as long as he can, but finally tells Elias who frees them. Reese calls Carter to warn her, but Elias successfully takes Moretti. Reese admits that he had to give Elias Moretti’s address to save Leila.Carter says that Reese should have called the police and let them handle it. She refuses to help Reese and Finch anymore and tells Reese to get out before the police arrive.

Later, Finch and Reese hand Leila over to her grandparents. As the two men watch the family reunion, Reese wonders if they’ll ever have children. Finch notes that the problem with children is that one never knows how they’ll turn out.

Elias has Moretti brought to him and says, “Hello, Dad.”

Point of Interest

Finch identifies himself as "Dr. Tillman" to the Duty Nurse. Dr. Tillman was the POI in s1 e4 as a vigilante doctor.

It kills me that Carter says she's no longer going to help Reese and Finch and then immediately helps Reese by telling him to leave. To add that she remonstrates John for not trusting the police to handle things and then tells him to leave before the police, the people she wants him to trust, arrive. Like have some self awareness there Carter.

Also as much as I love Enrico Colantoni as Elias, the idea of an "ethical" crime boss (who won't harm kids) gives me serious side eye. I'm not sure how he plans to be a crime boss without kids being at the very least collateral damage from various criminal enterprises. He likely means he wouldn't personally hurt a kid, but I just found trying to keep Elias likable after he endangers a baby a bit too hard to swallow.

I adore Finch's playpen made of stacked books. But it looks less than sturdy.

Hilarious (caricature-as-) police sketch.

Self-proclaimed "Ethical" villains - almost universally self-justifying and wrong. Real life example could be Bankman-Fried's (and his ilk's) self-serving "ethical altruism" bullshit to justify their selfishness.

Oooh... Finch: "The trouble with children is you never know how they turn out."

I just assumed Elias was lying.
