Drive Angry (2011)

Milton is a hardened felon who has broken out of Hell, intent on finding the vicious cult who brutally murdered his daughter and kidnapped her baby. He joins forces with a sexy, tough-as-nails waitress, who's also seeking redemption of her own. Caught in a deadly race against time, Milton has three days to avoid capture, avenge his daughter's death, and save her baby before she's mercilessly sacrificed by the cult.

Stars Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke, David Morse, Charlotte Ross, Katy Mixon, and Tom Atkins; co-written and directed by Patrick Lussier.

When I recently wrote up the Ghost Rider sequel on the purple, with some disappointment, someone suggested that I should look at this; I'd already seen it, or at least part of it, but it was likely that I was drunk at the time and so I thought I'd take another look, and I'm glad that I did. It was the real sequel to Ghost Rider, and in some respects was even wilder and crazier (and definitely hornier) than that movie. It's a decent candidate for Maximum Cage. A few things that stand out:

- The protagonist is named John Milton.

- Amber Heard singing along to "Fuck the Pain Away" in the car.

- The Accountant. My theory is that he is Judas Iscariot; his weapon is a piece of silver, and Judas was the treasurer for the apostles. My favorite William Fichtner role, and that's including Heat and The Dark Knight.

- The sex scene. No, not the one where Piper catches her boyfriend cheating and throws the woman out of the apartment sans clothes. The sex scene. You'll know it if/when you see it.

- Cage's hair. It's really pretty shitty, which makes perfect sense because you wouldn't expect to escape hell with perfect hair.

- The villain. Could teach Blackheart, the villain from Ghost Rider, a thing or two about being a sexy scumbag.

- The Godkiller.

Anyway, heavily recommended if you're into that sort of thing.

I knew you'd like it - and I agree it is the real Ghost Rider sequel.

William Fichtner looks like he's having SO MUCH FUN in this movie! That by itself elevates it above what it should be.

This is the movie where one could make the case that they were brainstorming ideas and they called out 'No bad ideas' and meant it. It is watchable though, which I can't say about Cage's worst movies.

looking forward to watching, maybe as a double feature with Mandy (which I have seen and absolutely loved)

I watched this purely because of William Fichtner, and found it surprisingly enjoyable -- I think it's time for a rewatch!
