Reese must protect an investigative journalist through surreptitious means to avoid becoming part of her story.

Reese watches this week's POI blackmail a source into giving her information.

At the precinct, Carter congratulates Fusco on secretly getting the information to bring down HR. He tells her to keep her voice down because his record isn't clean. Special Agent Nicholas Donnelly is among the officers and Carter congratulates him. He assures her that he'll get back to hunting down Reese once he finishes with HR, and Carter realizes that he doesn't have the big boss yet. Donnelly figures that the big boss may not be a cop.

Simmons, a key member of HR, threatens Fusco. He wants to find out what the FBI has on HR's upper management.

Maxine receives a tip from a mysterious caller that Zambrano, the son of a mafia don, is the head of HR. When her editor refuses to run with an uncorroborated story, Maxine goes to confront Zambrano. While Zambrano doesn't confess, Maxine gathers enough evidence to get her editor's approval to run with the story.

Because Maxine is also working on a story about The Man in the Suit, Reese can't approach her directly like he usually does. Finch makes a dating profile for Reese and through it flirts with Maxine. They make a date. However, Reese doesn't read the notes Finch typed up for him to help him win over Maxine. Luckily, Finch has secure the help for Zoe to pose as Reese's ex. She "accidentally" runs into them during the date demonstrating that Reese is a catch. Maxine gets a call from her editor that her story is false and she realizes that Zambrano is in danger, while Carter call Reese to tell him the same thing. Reese gives Maxine a ride to Zambrano's, but they discover his body.

Carter brings them both in to give their statements. While at the station Donelly reveals that Zambrano was their witness against the REAL HR boss. ambrano's father had a ledger of HR's payroll and he found it after his father was killed. Zambrano called the FBI and agreed to turn over the ledger once he had immunity.

While on a second "date" with Maxine, Reese thwarts an attempt on her life. He decides to take her to his place. Finch realizing that Bear is part of John's cover, he rushes with him to John's apartment. He arrives just before Maxine and John do requiring him to hide in a closet where John has stockpiled various intimidating weapons. Once Reese has shown her to the bathroom, Finch comes out and warns John to get her out as soon as possible as the longer she stays, the more likely he'll blow his cover.

Finch identifies the two men who attempted to kill Maxine and let's Reese know as well as sending the information to Maxine. Maxine asks to meet with Zoe. During their meeting Zoe admits that she doesn't know who the head of HR is, but points out that political campaigns buy disposable cell phones by the hundreds. Maxine notices a political ad on the tv and realizes that Zoe is suggesting that one of the two candidates is the boss. Zoe tells her that officially they've never met and walks away.

Reese and Maxine go to the docks and break in. Reese finds the ledger inside a carousel horse. However, the killers arrive. Finch warns Reese that he can't take action without blowing his cover, but that Carter is on her way. Carter and Fusco break in, but one of the killers realizes that there are no sirens so they don't have any back up.

Maxine grabs the journal and discovers that Walker is the boss. Fusco takes the ledger as evidence and goes outside. He pulls out the pages about himself and Simmons and walks away.

Reese attempts to go on a "normal" date with Maxine after the threat to her is neutralized. Maxine rejects him because she's "in love" with her job as well as suspecting he's not over Zoe, but also hints she knows he's "the Man in the Suit."

As Griffin wins the election, Simmons meets with the real boss of HR... Quinn. Quinn echoes his words to Maxine earlier, saying that people like him will be around forever.

Points of Interest

While Reese has shown interest in a female character before (Zoe who also appears in this episode) this is the first time we see him try for a conventional romance like the one he had with Jessica since she died. However, he is rejected for a variety of reasons including that Maxine likely knows he is The Man in the Suit.

HR has more than 75 of the dirty cops on its payroll arrested, but Simmons and the head of HR evade capture and exposure.

Alonzo Quinn, who is not a cop, is revealed to be the head of HR.

Fusco refers to John by his first name, and not by nickname as in many other episodes.

A quick sequence of surveillance videos around 35:40 includes several interesting marks made by the Machine:

A red cube around top floors of a building labelled "NSA DSF 203 F12", short for "National Security Agency Defense Services Facility 203.F12."

A red "restricted air space" circle around the Freedom Tower.

Saturn and Earth's Moon are marked with astronomical symbols. The moon includes a dotted line marking its orbital path. This is possibly the first time we see The Machine mark non-terrestrial objects during the series.

One of the most distinctive filming locations in this episode was the historic Forest Park Carousel, not far from where I live in Queens.

A better episode. Not sure I altogether buy that Finch would be that good at text flirting, though.
