The Amazing Digital Circus: The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor

Caine, trying to appease the apathetic Zooble, sets up a horror adventure for everyone with a Normal Door and a Really Scary Door. Of course, Pomni gets put onto the hard path, along with the usually-useless Kinger, who seems much less addled for some reason.

It's a well-constructed episode, with the breath-holding contest at the beginning paying off at the end. During the pre-adventure part of the story, Pomni asks to make sure none of the characters will become self-aware, refering to Gummigoo's existential crisis in the previous episode.

While people who enter the Circus don't remember their names, they do appear to remember other aspects of their old life, and so we learn that, before entering, Kinger had seven years of Computer Science classes, implying he was a grad student. He also had a wife, who was in the Circus too but abstracted. Fans say her name was Queenie (which may be official). Back in the Pilot episode, Queenie's face can be seen on the door of one of the unused rooms in the hallway.

It's revealed that in dark places, Kinger's senses of paranoia and worry fade, and he becomes much more rational. The show seems to be moving towards humanizing all of the various wacky characters, explaining why they are the way they are.

Zooble doesn't go on the adventure, staying with Caine who tries to analyze them and figure out why they aren't interested in going on them. (Zooble uses they/them pronouns.) We find out that Zooble doesn't like their body, even though it's modular specifically so they can be whatever they feel like. While this is going on, Caine has a moment of self-doubt about the adventures he makes, causing the world of the Circus to glitch out for a few seconds. But Caine seems like he genuinely wants to help the people trapped in the Circus, he's just incapable of doing so.

This was fun. I liked that Kinger got a rational moment and a little backstory, even as the entire set up remains horrific.
