Severance: Half Loop Rewatch
December 21, 2024 7:20 PM - Season 1, Episode 2 - Subscribe
Helly's attempted message to herself gets Mark sent to the break room. Irv gets a trip to wellness and meets Burt for the first time. Mark's outie goes on a terrible date and Petey moves into his basement.
So much happened in this one! We see Helly's surgery, and it becomes clear that Milchick isn't severed. Milchick to Helly: "Your orientation's been so much fun" - and "When we heard you were coming here, it was a miracle. It's anazing what you're doing."
Did we ever find out the reason for Mark's cube? Helly: "What about Mark's crystal head cube?" Dylan: "That's not a prize, that's just something they gave him."
The chemistry between John Turturro's Irv and Christopher Walken's Burt was so instant and palpable. Apparently John recommended Christopher for the role.
From Irv's wellness session: "Your outie is splendid and can swim gracefully and well."

Oh, that's interesting - the thing about what Mr. Kier liked for breakfast came up in the conversation with Milchick before Helly's surgery, which suggests that he helped set the survey questions and the questions are different for every participant. I guess they print a new copy of the binder each time.

Oh I didn’t think that - to me, it seemed clear that Milchick launched a conversational set piece as they walk past the big frieze portrait. So that there would be a non sequitur stimulus in short term memory. Also wouldn’t the Innie’s notice customization of the intake form?

I wonder how Petey got a recording of Mark's break room session. It doesn't have to mean there's someone inside Lumon working against severance, but it might.
I am really enjoying seeing Turturro's Irving trying to be a perfect Lumon employee. I wonder if his outie started out that way or if he always wanted to burn it down.

Yeah I don't know if the source of that recording is ever explained. Was it the most recent session where Mark paid for Helly's infraction, or an earlier one?

FYI — Apple dropped the first 8 minutes of s2e1 as a teaser. You can find it on the show’s page under bonus content.

Yeah, I thought that was a recording of Petey's own break room session, not one of Mark's, as well.

The ominous orchestral score during Irv's black-goo hallucinations: I'm pretty sure it's a slowed-down variant of the guitar riff from Ace of Spades.

It was definitely Mark's voice from the break room, confirmed by closed captions. The source might be the surgeon?
