STAX: Soulsville, U.S.A.: "I know a place"

In 1960s Memphis, an audacious set of interracial collaborators dared to make their own music on their own terms, forming Stax Records (trailer, review, Wattstax previously). Streaming on Max.
I really enjoyed this show. Great access, skillful blending of new and archival footage, a narrative that places a story about a close-knit group of people into a larger cultural and historical context, just very good documentary filmmaking.
If you like this, I highly recommend Wattstax, Summer of Soul, and Shake! Otis at Monterey.

When I was in college, I ended up meeting Rufus Thomas ("Walking the Dog," "Do the Funky Chicken").
Someone asked him what the difference was between Motown and Stax. Rufus thought about it for a second and then said, "The Motown man is the man you hope your daughter brings home. The Stax man is the man you afraid she brings home."

Oh man, the section cutting between Booker T being frank about how bad things were for the Black members of the Stax team away from the studio and Steve Cropper saying everything was ideal and "if it was so bad, why didn't they say anything?"
