I enjoyed the fuck out of this.

I have thoughts, but I'll stand by this thing from the entertainment that it has given me.

I’ve jokingly referred to this show as the worst health and safety video ever starring Billy Bob Thornton, while also recommending it. It’s about a horrible industry and the horrible people who run it while reminding us those people are human but also still horrible.

I thought this was a terribly bad show but I also could not stop laughing at the abysmal safety record of the oilfields. If this show was anything near as realistic as it pretends to be, the entire season after the first episode workplace fatality would be safety meetings, JHSAs, complete worksite shutdowns, safety protocol overhauls, OSHA visits, HSE interventions, etc., etc. And then, there would be three more seasons of safety meetings, worksite shutdowns, and OSHA visits. Can't believe Billy Bob was so worried about the cartel when his workplace could've been shut down by a health & safety rep at any moment. I can so perfectly picture the diagrams and slideshows of the fourth job-site death where the guy pops the zap straps and gets crushed by the unsecured load of tubing rolling of a lowbed. Also that was the fourth (???) job-site fatality in a two-day (???) stretch, to say nothing of the Lost Time incident with Billy Bob's son and the numerous other incidents that would qualify as Near Misses.

I was hollering in the scene where the son tells his supervisor something like "I haven't been trained or oriented in that role and lack the requisite safety credentials but I will put the whole worksite at risk by performing the role now because a supervisor has explicitly told us in front of multiple witnesses that maintaining our schedule supersedes following proper safety protocols."

The scene where Billy Bob Epically Owns Female Enviromentalist Liberal with Facts and Logic was hilarious too, I've seen a couple breakdowns of how deeply incorrect the conclusions drawn from that scene are and they're pretty funny.

Also was incredibly skeeved out by the daughter character.

One column about Landman's false claims about renewable energy and climate change.

Billy Bob Thornton is incredibly watchable in this! It's a ridiculous series. My favorite small thing was the ringtone he used for his ex-wife who he reconciles with - it was so jarring every time and at home I would flinch exactly like he would onscreen.

lizard music is there a gift link to that LAT column? (Or, Cpt. The Mango, do you have links?) I've been wanting to see a dissection of that speech of Billy Bob's, ever since I watched this show a couple months ago.

I agree it's a ridiculous show. But Billy Bob Thornton is irresistible! I also found Jacob Lofland really compelling. The mom & daughter duo... ooof, the way Sheridan writes women characters is disturbing.

My dad worked for Phillips before Conoco, and I would love to get his opinion on the show, but he can’t stand cursing, and would turn it off so fast.

I thought this show was fun bonkers - it's dumb as hell, so much so you can't really take it seriously. The bad thing is that lots of people will, of course mostly the anti-eco speeches.

The son was a dullard and his story line drags a lot, and the wife and daughter even more bonkers than the main story line with Billy Bob. The daughter' storyline is skeevy, but people like that really do exist.

It's hilarious that 3 members of the executive team all live together in one house. It's like an obvious plot contrivance for shenanigans.

worst health and safety video ever

Lol, also unintentionally reproduces the obnoxious self importance of oil dudes

Just pretend all the accidents happened to contractors, and so there are no safety meetings

The living arrangements in Landman are one of the more believable parts of the show to me. Tons of people work in West Texas and actually live elsewhere, so corporate housing, mancamps and RV's are all over the place. And rents are high, so shared housing is not uncommon.

They just go home when they arent' actually working
