[TRAILER] Decades ago, residents of Newt, Texas, long suspected that the Sawyer family was responsible for the disappearances of many people. When their suspicions finally were confirmed, vigilantes torched the Sawyer compound and killed every member of the family -- or so they thought. This is on streaming and home video in non-3D as simply Texas Chainsaw.

The bad:
The studio's half-assed, ham-handed bumping of this from the 1990's to 2012/2013 is stupid and makes things weird as shit in some places. The baby from 1973 is a 22 y/o 39 years later? There are not enough kills and they don't have the same level of savagery as the better entries in the series, let alone the creative depravity typical for modern horror sequels. And there is some janky-ass CGI, particularly in the fire at the beginning and in the meat grinder bit at the end.
The good:
They actually did something with the story that was different and it still ties into one of the main threads of the series (a demented version of family.) "DO YOUR THING, CUZ!" is both hilariously stupid but also sort of warped/brilliant/exhilarating.
Graham Skipper said on the Screen Drafts podcast that he has spoken about this film with its screenwriter and the original script was tighter, entirely made sense, and was indeed set in the 1990's. Enough of it shines through that it works for me. Stupid in places, but sort of delightful, too.
Not saying this is a good film, only that I like it pretty well in spite of its flaws.
