A Bigger Splash (2015)

In Luca Guadagnino’s sexy thriller, Tilda Swinton is a legendary rock diva, recuperating with her lover on the small Italian island of Pantelleria. Her obnoxious ex-, Ralph Fiennes, imposes himself on them, and tries to win her back. A gorgeous remake of 1969 La Piscine, and based on David Hockney luxurious Los Angeles painting.

It is the second installment in Guadagnino's self-described Desire trilogy, following I Am Love (2009) and preceding Call Me by Your Name (2017).

David Ehrlich about Ralph Fiennes’ Narcissistic Dance Moves.

Wow - somehow I missed that this was the case. I will have to check this out.

I think I was expecting a little more “psychological thriller” than what this film delivers, which is more like…humid tension? It goes somewhat slack rather than remaining taut.

But: stunning locations, Suspiria/The Lost Daughter Dakota Johnson* rather than Fifty Shades/Madame Web Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton’s haircut, Ralph Fiennes' little dancey dance, that one concert scene in the stadium.

Worth a watch. I’d put it behind I Am Love, CMBYN, and Challengers, though.

* Is her character fascinatingly opaque or did she just forget to act while the camera was pointing in her direction? The world will never know!

IMO this movie is kind of terrible, and sure, Ralph Fiennes sort of imposes himself on her (them?), but she is more than willing to put herself in questionable situations with him, and 'I'm just here to be nude' Dakota Johnson does the same with her beau.

The serious scenes also are quite silly (like the one where the thing happens) until they become serious.

Whatever. It's more a 'vibes' movie than an actual story. Fiennes is really fun. He steals the show and the setting is pretty interesting.
