Wow, the production team from A24's Heretic borrowed pretty liberally from the secret basement design.

Oh yeah Heretic basement me reminded me so much of the Sect that it actually took me out of the movie. It's not Stagefright but it is bonkers and weird.

Stagefright was quite definitely swiped from for one of the more memorable scenes from Yellowjackets, season 2; if anything, I wish they'd swiped more!

It's very strange that I feel like I have totally seen The Sect when, to all appearances, I have not. I think I've somehow conflated The Church and Lucio Fulci's Manhattan Baby into a single film I thought was this film, but only exists in my hazy imagination.

Maybe you saw that doc Dario Argento's World of Horror? Luigi Cozzi put like ten or twelve minutes of clips from The Sect into that, it felt like.

To be fair, the story of the Sect feels a lot like they took the scripts from all the Italian rip offs of Rosemary's Baby, Omen, Poltergeist and 1979's the Visitor and put them into a blender. It often feels like it has a script but not really. It's like one of those weird savoury Jell-O salads Anglos like - you think you might enjoy it but it is just confusion.
