Angel: She   Rewatch
September 10, 2015 6:14 AM - Season 1, Episode 13 - Subscribe

Angel teams up with a sexy demon princess to rescue victims of thinly veiled female genital mutilation. Wesley officially joins the team, still being all klutzy hyperBritish old Wesley. And Angel busts a move, in the truest sense of the word "bust".

Remember that brief period around the turn of the millennium when Bai Ling was juuust about to break big in the U.S.? This was part of that.

Bai Ling was always a bit of a puzzle. Her acting was fine, but not extraordinary. I remember press coverage of her being all "She's Weird!" but nothing was specifically weird enough to recall. I wonder if she wasn't given a fair shake, but she was in the public eye for several years, so I guess she had a chance.

A fine episode to my recollection though, especially given the other dregs of the season. Blunt perhaps but feminist stories are always encouraged. I also like stories where noble warriors clash and reach a respectful detente. The wikipedia page for the episode says it was thought Ling might return to the series, but obviously that never came to being. Could have been interesting to see how that developed, if only for another small character arc like Anne's to show the good Angel and crew are actually doing in the world.

What is it with Wesley and Giles and their fascination with American miniature party food? Wesley’s knitting skills are rather impressive. I’d be proud of that sweater.

Angel should have embraced his calling as an art museum tour guide.

I feel like I appreciated the message this one was trying to send but in terms of artistic impact it was so clumsily done. Brutally clunky.
Wesley: Please don’t fire me. What happened yesterday was an anomaly. I’m very *rarely* taken hostage. (This is, sadly for him, not true.)

PS: Nancy’s Petticoat are daylilies, not roses. Bad set dramaturgy!!

I guess it does at least have the goofiest credits sequence of the entire series!
