To further his claim to the title of Ealdorman, Uhtred marries a wife selected for him by King Alfred, unaware of why his bride had been previously shunned by suitors. After the Danes invade and take a Wessex fortress, Alfred exchanges hostages, Uhtred among them, in another deal to bide time until he can properly deal with those who threaten the future of England.

Alfred is such a dick, Machiavellian before there was one. Odda is a slimy weasel, I shall enjoy it when he gets his comeuppance, as he so surely will. Leofric is a joy, he has the best lines in this show. Uhtred is a confused hero, constantly lashing and thrashing about. I love them all.
