Some great moments in this episode:

The flashbacks to Dick's birth (although I needed the commentary to tell me that it actually was his birthday - did everyone else get that?) - I loved the technique of having them occupy space in the Draper house. The difference in Pete's conversation with Lane about the promotion vs. Ken's, then Pete's glorious glower in the joint meeting. Trudy's a great partner for Pete; in some ways she has a better head for business than him. Plus, "Don't go to the well;. there's no water there" is probably a good mantra for many of us with complicated relationships!

As a Baltimore kid (as was Weiner), the references to Friendship - the pre-BWI name for the Baltimore airport - and Hausner's restaurant were fun.

And Bert Peterson and Roger - "Oh, it's that meeting."

He does mention that it's his birthday to the stewardess. But when she asks to see his driver's license he says it wouldn't matter. So I assume it was Dick Whitman's actual birthday, and of course that's not going to be the date on Don Draper's license.

Huh, I didn't see the birthday connection with the opening scene at all.

According to the imdb trivia, the Sal/bell hop scene was planned out all the way from when Bryan Batt was first cast.

I LOVE that Hildy is the one who gets to burst Pete's bubble.

Unless you're Pete, and then it's "why can't I have anything good all at once?"

Petulant Pete's happy dance after receiving the good news. gif

Don: "I keep going to a lot of places and ending up somewhere I've already been." That's Don's story for six and a half seasons.

cwest, thanks for finding a gif of Pete's dance! One of my favorites. For me, it brings to mind a young Mr. Burns from The Simpsons for some reason. (Or, as Weiner said on the commentary, the Grinch.)

Sweetie Darling that always really reminded me of Mr. Burns too!

Roger, you ass.
I wonder how Dick knew his own back story.
Ken is much more self assured. Probably that Vermonter upbringing.

Oh Sal. This whole accountant spiel is hilarious, and why Don makes such a good pitchman. He's been pitching forever.
I guess I forgot how much Joan was looking forward to getting out.

Harry Crane and his smug 42 cents. Looks like someone has realized his value.

Bert has an ant farm AND a cattle ranch. Cooper on the range! And London Fog is a great name.

I wonder how Dick knew his own back story.

Yes, this. I was confused at the start because he was looking at his own birth? Was it how he imagined it went, or did someone tell him in great detail? I suppose his adopted mother and his father might have told him things in the context of making him feel guilty, or unwanted. And the story of how he got his name is just so sad. I didn't remember that from first watch.

Or possibly it was just well known around town why that kid is named Dick. He certainly expected the hobo to know that he was a "whore child".

I like to use that birth scene to construct my "Don Draper is unstuck in time" theory.

Don and Sal make cracks about The Lost Weekend (protagonist also named Don) as they look at the liquor ad.
