A troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed videogame designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways.

AV Club review

This was such a strange movie. I think I like it, but I'm not sure. Reynolds does a great job here, juggling 3 roles (that are essentially one).

Melissa McCarthy was phenomenal, even playing herself!

Yeah, I think I liked this too. I want to say that it was a cute movie, which is weird considering it's some kinda mindbender scifi thing. You don't usually describe those as such, I guess.

Are all movies about Ryan Reynolds about how he's some sort of golden god? I feel like that was the kernel around which the last several of his that I've watched were built. The (non) superhero one... Deadpool? 100% driven by the fact that RR is HOTT. And I watched The Voices recently, also predicated on the male lead being HOTTT. ...and then this film.

I mean, that's some serious Baader-Meinhof/recency bias in effect, I understand, but still I have to wonder if they're all like that?

Anyway, I kept expecting there to be a sane explanation for what was going on here, and for the RR character to have to deal with it somehow. Like the sit-down with McCarthy took a left turn for me when I was expecting a "reminder" about his disassociative identity disorder. Taking it in entirely the opposite direction was fascinating (I guess?) but I felt like it let the film makers get away with not having an ending or much character development. I mean, the whole film is a long attempt at kickstarting a forgetful deux ex machina. And the numbering system? Totally random. I mean, if we're in base 10 and he's a 9 then why not have 10 swoop in at the end if you're going the deux ex machina route?

*sigh* Sometimes I feel like my standards for movie picture entertainments is too high. Ryan Reynolds certainly was good-looking in this movie.
