Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Mike Pence
March 19, 2018 2:48 PM - Season 5, Episode 5 - Subscribe

This week:
  • Trump fires Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
  • Putin wins reelection as President of Russia to no one's surprise, ensuring horrible threats, poisoned opponents and meddling in foreign elections for foreseeable future.
  • And Now: Local News Cannot Be Trusted With St. Patrick's Day
  • Main Story: Mike Pence, the hyper-fundamentalist, hyper-intolerant Vice President in the Trump Administration, and the one person in it Trump cannot fire. His opposition to gay rights is well known, but, as Oliver admits, he has a cute rabbit named "Marlon Bundo." Pence has a book out, A Day in the Life of the Vice President, about his rabbit. LWT is putting out another book, about a different rabbit named Marlon Bundo, A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, where a boy rabbit falls in love with another boy rabbit. (See inside for more.)
The Mike Pence segment is on LWT's official YouTube channel.

The Trump White House: "Rated 'The #1 Place to Work' by Subpoena Magazine."
Russia: "Where the movie The Revenant was titled 'Lucky Man Has Fun Time.'"
Mike Pence: "Vice President of the United States and whatever the exact opposite of a silver fox is -- I'm going to go with 'ashen weasel.'"

EXTRA:
Have you never heard of Pence's 90s radio program, The Mike Pence Show?
Politico: "The old cassettes that explain Mike Pence" (7/20/2016)
Boston Globe goes into Pence's pre-nomination career, which involved having a small radio studio in his congressional office: "How Make Pence found his footing." (7/20/2016)

Last Week Tonight's children's book, A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo, is available on Amazon and on the websites BetterBundoBookand (ugh) "Focus on the FURmily". The book is #1 on Amazon.com and Audible right now.

I'm glad John has toned down the stunt calls to activism at the end of the show this season. It makes the truly fantastic stunts really shine. Making an actual real book with distribution (and audio book with A-list celebrities) just to troll the vice president is amazing.

The actual Marlon Bundo is also taking it well. Which is good because some quick googling shows that his book has at least partial proceeds going to real charities (so any sort of counter bunny book protest is probably not bad (2018 is weird)) and that Pence's daughter who wrote the book is not a monster and doesn't deserve the sort of ridicule that Trump's kids deserve.

Marlon Bundo is undeniably a really cute name for a rabbit. I bet Mike didn't come up with it himself.

My sister-in-law is totally into that Focus on the Family stuff. She raised her kids by their precepts. Ugh.

I don't know anything about Omarosa and expected nothing of her given her association with Trump, but she actually seems to have at least some sense.

Russian culture is so deeply weird.

Looks like the book has joined the "must read list" for the spring. Here's Amazon's "Frequently Bought Together:"

A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership by James Comey

John Oliver on Ellen discussing the book (and Jon learning it hit #1 on Amazon).

I thought I'd bought the book fast enough to get it right away, but it's on backorder. I can't wait. I have nieces who are a good age for this book.

Gah, I should have gotten one for my 1yo nephew! S'pose I can just order it and it'll arrive whenever.

I can't look at Karen Pence without thinking "If she makes more threats, I'm going to mindworm the fuck out of her bases"

Is she making threats? It'd have been nice if even one person within one or two circles of the administration had a thick skin.

Oh, I dunno. It's just she looks like a brown-haired version of Miriam from SMAC.

Charlotte, the daughter who wrote the book, is taking it well and bought a copy. I haven't heard anything about Karen Pence, who illustrated the book, commenting.

I saw a quick blurb that the publisher didn't like it but it was mild.

Is anyone more skilled at issuing an elaborate "fuck you" that actually does substantial good?

I hope to become one, once I get the money.
