Patrick Melrose: Some Hope
May 27, 2018 3:36 AM - Season 1, Episode 3 - Subscribe
Patrick reluctantly agrees to go to his first big social event since recovering. Together with his good friend Johnny Hall, he attends a glittering party in the English countryside hosted by former hippie Bridget ā now married, titled and miserable ā and attended by Princess Margaret as well as a number of Patrick's old flames. Amid a crowd of social dragonflies, Patrick searches for redemption and capacity for forgiveness, while confronting his past in a myriad of ways.
Iām really enjoying this. Besides the obvious abuse... the interpretation of the addiction and recovery is so real. Not overdone...

I love Patrick's friendship with Johnny. It seems like he's the only person that Patrick really loves or trusts. It's nice to see. And when he tells Johnny what happened to him as a child and tries to deflect it with a joke like he always does and he doesn't let him. It was a really good scene.
And I was really struck by the scene at dinner when the princess is humiliating the ambassador and Patrick is just staring straight ahead, with his jaw twitching, clearly trying not to scream or throw something. It was well done. Cumberbatch (who I adore) is really, really great in this part.

I don't think it needs repeating, but that Cumberbatch guy just might have a future in acting.
