Ross faces ruin as, along with the rest of his collective, he must sell copper to the Warleggans' company at a nominal price. When an outbreak of diphtheria leaves Elizabeth, Francis, their son, and all their servants ill, Demelza goes to Trenwith to care for them, with disastrous results for her own family. The Warleggans' ship wrecks on the rocks near a Nampara beach, and Ross rallies the villagers to salvage its cargo of food.

Mark Daniel marries visiting theatrical player Keren Smith. Ross and Demelza's daughter, Julia Grace, is born, and Demelza's father makes a memorable appearance at the christening. The young, progressive, and compassionate Dr. Dwight Enys comes to the area. Ross proposes that the pit owners form a collective with their own smelting company in order to resist the Warleggans' monopoly, but Francis opts out and tries to recoup his financial losses by gambling. Demelza attempts to reunite Verity and Andrew Blamey in town, but their meeting is interrupted by a riot among the starving miners.

The body of a murdered and mutilated child prostitute is found on a bridge in New York in 1896. Alienist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, who has been asked to consult on the case by Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, enlists the help of his Harvard classmate, New York Times illustrator John Moore, and then that of Commissioner Roosevelt's secretary, Sara Howard, who is also a lifelong friend of Moore's. Together with two brothers, Detective Sergeant Marcus Isaacson, Detective Sergeant Lucius Isaacson, they form a de facto special unit to investigate the murder, which Dr. Kreizler believes to be connected to the murder of two of his former child patients.
