Sherman's Showcase is a fictional music / dance / variety show that has run for 47 seasons. Now, the mostly-complete 23-DVD set is out, thanks to Mad Decent Records, leading to this eight-episode retrospective of Sherman McDaniel's decades of introducing the world to the finest in soul, funk, and blaxploitation cinema.

Sherman's Showcase airs on IFC and streams on the AMC app and Sling TV.

I have no idea how I stumbled on this, and I am very much not the demographic for it, and I'm sure that I'm missing a lot of the jokes, but the ones I get are plentiful and hilarious.

I am extremely intrigued. While it's not an actual 23-DVD set, Mad Decent released the soundtrack (iTunes, which has additional singles [with "period-appropriate" cover art!] as related releases).

Seeing Mad Decent mentioned, I wondered if this was something related to What Would Diplo Do? (review on The Guardian; Wikipedia stub). Doesn't seem like it is -- that was from Viceland (majority-owned by A&E Networks), while this is on IFC (owned by AMC Networks). Doesn't look like it is (but it makes me want to rewatch that show -- it mocks the EDM superstar scene pretty well, without getting mean from what I recall).

I have hopes that this will help scratch the same itch as "Comrade Detective."

One episode in, and I must be onto something good - my wife shook her head and said "This is just like that weird fake English science show you love, isn't it?," so, you know, write that down in your copybooks now.
