There is a legitimate reason why most heroes don't tell their close ones their secret identity, since all the stories eventually lead to that close one being put in danger because they know the identity. It's a trope, but it's an effective one. I don't blame Kate, but I also understand Mary's point of view.
The line from Sophie's mother about how life is already hard enough for her as a woman of color, and now she wants to come out too, was super emotional and very realistic. I'm glad this show is tackling such complicated issues.

As far as Kate putting loved her ones in danger, the problem is that the loved ones of superheroes get put in danger whether they are in on the secret or not. I mean it's not like Mary won't continually be out in the line of fire.
But the real relationship problem is that Kate is. Still. TALKING. to. Alice. WHY? It's like, "Oh gee, Alice killed another couple of people, better go lecture her." except she won't, she'll just hang her head and mope. Guilt is one thing, but at this point Kate is actively enabling Alice's murders. And if it wasn't for one-off threat like smile girl or vampire girl, Kate would look totally useless.
Seriously. Old Yeller has been foaming at the mouth for a week now. It's time to be a bit proactive.

Wait, Sophie didn't know Batwoman is Kate?! REALLY? I know it's been a while, but you've made out before!

She thought she did until she saw Batwoman and Kate together (with Julia Pennyworth wearing the bat suit). So despite what she feels when kissing her, she has seen with her own eyes that they are two separate people, so she believes that.
