Star Trek comes full circle

CBS announced this morning that they've placed a series order for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the ninth Star Trek series to be aired. Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck will all be returning as their ST:Discovery versions of Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock.
The series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.
Mount's Pike is my favorite Trek captain, knocking Ben Sisko out of the top spot within his first 10 minutes on the bridge.

Huh, not surprised. Honesty, I kinda wish they had done this from the beginning. Discovery was good and different, but it didn't scratch the Star Trek itch for me.

the decade before Captain Kirk
Double of a 'five-year mission'? Or just allowing for several seasons until Pike is disabled?
I suspected something similar in the last episode of Picard Season 1, when he got a new body... it actually opens up the possibility of Picard outliving Patrick Stewart.
But in the tradition of three-letter-designations for Star Trek shows (TOS TAS TNG DS9 VOY ENT DIS PIC), SNW seems like a natural. (But what about the pending animated Below Decks show? not BD, how about BEL or BDA for animated?)

Yeah, not gonna lie, I've been sort of disappointed with the current-era trek themes. Like if I heard them in an elevator, I wouldn't go "ah sure, Picard, this is my jam." I'm almost nostalgic for the one where it's been a long road getting from here to there, and that one is objectively terrible.

Well, the film themes are often much better (TWOK, TVH, & FC come to mind). VOY had an excellent theme but the show that we actually got rarely if ever fit its mood.
Agreed about the DISCO and PIC themes. I'd wager good money that they go at least somewhat more retro, and noticeably less contemporary, with the SNW theme & opening credits.
And to go a bit further off-topic, I'm looking forward to LOW a little more now after reading this.

I am excited about this and the idea of a "lower decks" series, but also sorta hope at some point the producers get back to the post-Voyager future, because you can only prequel so many prequels before you thoroughly saturate the pre-history. I guess PIC did that, so I should really sit down and watch it..

I am very excited about this. Everyone is raving about Anson Mount's Pike, and I did adore him, but I'm especially excited to get to spend more time with Rebecca Romejn's Number One. And Ethan Peck's Spock. And I can't wait to see who the other characters are. I wonder if we're going to get Lieutenant José Tyler, Yeoman J.M. Colt and Dr. Philip Boyce?
