The Legend of Korra: Kuvira's Gambit
December 12, 2014 6:28 AM - Season 4, Episode 11 - Subscribe

Bolin crashes a presidential meeting once again with Suyin and Zhu Li in tow to warn of Kuvira's super weapon and the impending attack on Republic City. Prince Wu shares his struggle over bathroom dependency to encourage the city's residents to evacuate in an orderly manner and Varrick and Zhu Li are reunited. Asami, Mako, Bolin and Korra set off on a mission to destroy the spirit cannon before it can reach the city, only to make a horrifying discovery that threatens to upend everyone's plans. Also, hey, it's Kai.

Kuvira's Gambit can be watched on Nick.com and via the Nick.com app for tablets and smartphones. At some point it will be available at iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and Google Play.

i was pretty sure that kuvira's beau was going to get tortured/killed by his own mom. That made me sad. But not as sad as "I'm going to keep you in a different place than your lover" being a successful plot element.

(not reading the comments/summary, not reading it)

ARGH IT WAS NOT ON AMAZON THIS MORING F U NICKELODEON.

I hate, hate their shitty crappy busted glitchy ad-crufted website. HATE IT. Please be on Amazon today or tomorrow. Or at least Nick's Youtube, that channel seems to work most of the time.

I mean, there will probably be some illegal uploads of it already, but I paid for the series on Amazon specifically not to deal with that.

I was flipping out myself, emjaybee. It's finally available on Amazon, if you haven't checked since you posted an hour ago. I desperately downloaded the Nick app and watched it frustratingly on it, which is passable until a commercial freezes it, or you want to try and rewind to an earlier scene. I mean, seriously, Nickelodeon, you just GOTTA do what you can to twist every bit of your insipid handling of one of your best shows to the very utmost on its way out. I totally expect next Friday to result in the accidental replacement of the digital file with Spongebob or something.

I have tossed my recap in the link above (and here, too, wowzer!) for those interested in my completely overthought perspective on things.

Nickelodeon hate aside, I enjoyed the episode overall and it's a pretty great setup for the one hour finale (okay, honestly, it's 45 some minutes of awesomeness...I wish it had another 15 minutes).

One thing I mentioned in my post, which I'll toss here because I just love that the writers went there...the title is called Kuvira's Gambit. In it, she basically does the final unthinkable thing, she brings her army to Republic City and demands its surrender. I have to believe this is a play on "Alea iacta est" or "The die is cast," which is allegedly what Julius Caesar said as he crossed the Rubicon River on his way to taking his army to Rome.

man, that giant robot really came out of nowhere. is doing shitty CG cheaper than 2d animation or something?

Yes, yes it is, actually, when it comes to how the object being animated is used. They generally like to do CGI on anything really big that's going to be animated, such as the mech suits to the airships and so on. I kind of got used to it, but it didn't integrate as much as I would have liked, personally.

i was pretty sure that kuvira's beau was going to get tortured/killed by his own mom. That made me sad. But not as sad as "I'm going to keep you in a different place than your lover" being a successful plot element.

Alas, I've had to bury my slightly evil Suyin dreams, too. Though, I dunno, if someone asked me if I wanted to live forever but never see my wife again or just be killed, I'd strongly consider the later. Take into consideration, this is strong passionate love, love that leads you to helping your girlfriend create super weapons, build reeducation camps, and blithely forced millions to your ambition's will. He's pretty hot for her. I think it was a decent threat.

Yeah. On one hand, I was kindof impressed with Korra for figuring out how to make a complex emotional threat. On the other hand, wow. We should be reaching the top of her character development arc, and emotional blackmail is not exactly part of the apogee I was hoping for.

There's got to be some better way they could have reached the reveal at the end.

And speaking of which... stone. cold. They start off the episode with material that could lead one to believe Kuvira really isn't just a megalomaniac. By the end, nope: Zhu Li was right, Kuvira is a monster. But unlike Zhu Li, I'll bet Bataar Jr can't say he regrets nothing.

Another complaint -- I'm not sure why it's so mysterious how to stop the colossus. It seems reasonably clear you'd do it exactly the same way that you'd infiltrate an airship and kidnap the official onboard.

I'm starting to worry that since, yet again, we're hanging out with a giant chaos-ray wielding monster standing by Republic City, we're heading for an ending that is about as satisfying as the writing in Book 2.

The interrogation scene certainly came at the right time! Korra wanted to go all Jack Bauer on Bataar Jr., and that didn't actually get anywhere, but Suyin treated him with compassion and actually got him to cooperate!

Forgive me, I'll be over here cackling furiously.

Because I'm delighted.

We have a giant fucking mecha robot that Kuvira is controlling totally Jaeger-style. Does it make sense, since she's just metalbending levers? No. Does it look awesome? HELL YEAH.

We have Wu proving that he is the smoothest mofo in the universe sometimes - a hell of a lot smoother than Mako and Reiko together.

We have the two bestest airbending warriors being all stealthy with Korra and doing stealthy things. Yeah, okay, Bumi doesn't have the years of airbending training Tenzin does, but he does have that fucking fierce soldier training, and then both of them are wearing the Stupid Sexy Tenzin outfits, and hi. Yes. More of that please.

We have Zhu Li standing up for herself like a boss, and Varrick being...well, Varrick. But he'll figure it out. It was delightful that even Bolin got what a stupid move that was. Aw Bolin, there actually is someone stupider in the room than you.

And we haveJunior! Poor stupid deluded Junior, who was probably never told how very important he was. Sure, he was told how clever he was. Sure, he was told how great it was that he could make things. But I'm sure it was all with that hint of "but you wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't for your father's designs/your mother's metalbending"

I know it seems out of character for Korra to bring in emotional blackmail, but I actually think that was a big step for her. Think about Book 1 and 2 - she'd just want to punch the hell out of him, and then someone else would have to stop her. But she's learning. She knows that violence doesn't solve anything. Sometimes you have to be tricky. Sometimes you have to come up with something else.

I'm a bit sad that Asami's flying mechas will never get to go out and do things, but maybe Suyin and the twins can build another giant mecha that Varrick and Asami can work with and then Korra and Kuvira can have a giant mecha battle, even though we got our giant kaiju battle in Book 2, I don't care because GIANT ROBOTS.

GIANT ROBOTS WITH GIANT SPIRIT GUNS ON THEIR GIANT ARMS.

Don't. Just don't. Even. No.

I know it seems out of character for Korra to bring in emotional blackmail, but I actually think that was a big step for her. This is dead on. Book 1, she physically threatens the Equalist promoter guy in the park. Book 2, she intercepts the crooked judge on the road and puts his head inside the maul of her polar bear dog. She's continuing to learn that force isn't always the best answer.

One, I gotta believe we will see at least one fly worthy Mecha-Bumju. It will fly! Two, we have another wild card in the industrial goodness deck - Hiroshi Sato. C'MON, there has to be a reason they threw him into the Book 4 stream of storylines and it wasn't because Asami needed emotional closure - that, frankly, isn't relevant to the story overall. Something connected to Sato is going to play a role in the season finale. Or...really, I'm totally devaluing Asami's character and the writers' attempt to give her a little bit of emotional development.

Not to mention, we also have the spirits. Spirit vines and spirits sound like a delightful way to bring down a colossus and mechanical army. I'm sensing a battle with Republic City's forces and spirits on one side versus Kuvira's tech army on the other, and for the heck of it, one on one combat between Korra and Kuvira in the midst. BUT, will Korra kill Kuvira, given the build up in this episode, even, that she doesn't have it in her?

Just watched the beginning again and noticed something: Kuvira doesn't respond to Bataar's profession of love in kind. Instead she says "I couldn't have done it without you, I can't wait to get married and live the rest of our lives together rule our empire together."

Bataar's words clearly profess *personal* affection, Kuvira's are readable that way, but on closer inspection also read a lot like they're a lot more about his utility and her power.

There was a lot more overt death-dealing in this episode than I was expecting. Children's show, yeah. But all those guys on those ships in the harbor!

I was glad to see Korra couldn't bring herself to hurt Bataar, especially this week when all the news is full of how useless torture is. And it was really believable that Suyin just couldn't get through to him; sometimes there is no answer for that kind of emotional dysfunction.

I think she loved him, after a fashion. It's just that building her empire was more important. She weighed her love for Bataar against her desire to build the Earth Empire, and Bataar came up wanting. She did show some emotion and is probably sad about losing him, but in her mind she's just being practical and self-sacrificing. Anything for the Empire.

Other thoughts:

Man, Kuvira is ice cold. I say this with a mixture of horror and admiration.

man, that giant robot really came out of nowhere.

Not completely out of nowhere -- it seems to be made from Zaofu's domes, which went missing shortly after the city was conquered. Pretty messed up, having a monument to her ego built from the remains of her former home. The mech didn't necessarily have to take on the form it did if the goal was just transporting the cannon without using rails. It is really cool that she controls it with metalbending, though.

I really, really love how confident and self-assured Korra was. I also love that Tenzin's respect for her was such that he didn't even question her plan to kidnap Bataar, he just said he'd do it.

There was such a pervasive sense of dread throughout this episode. I'm afraid someone (or several someones) might have died at the end there, and I think it might be Tenzin and/or Su. Their deaths would have the greatest emotional impact, I think.

I am so here for a Korra/Kuvira rematch, you have no idea. But Korra won't kill Kuvira. It doesn't make sense to me that the story would drive home that punching things doesn't solve all one's problems, only to have the plot resolved by Korra doing that very thing. I have no doubt that Korra will find some way to neutralize Kuvira, but what that way will be, I have no clue; things are looking pretty fucking grim right now.

I'm half way convinced we're going to have a giant Korra form against the giant robot, mirroring the fight against the Dark Avatar. The idea that Korra will have conquered two representations of change going too far (First the Spirit world overcoming the human world and the fragile democracy of republic city, and now technology overcoming the spirit world (through the militarization of the spirit vine) and the fragile democracy) seems like the type of thing that would appeal to the writers.

Well I finally got to watch! It was very satisfying, except for poor underused Iroh.

We have a giant fucking mecha robot that Kuvira is controlling totally Jaeger-style. Does it make sense, since she's just metalbending levers? No. Does it look awesome? HELL YEAH.

I thought that was showboating. Just pull the fucking levers with your hands, Kuvira, Jesus.

We have Wu proving that he is the smoothest mofo in the universe sometimes - a hell of a lot smoother than Mako and Reiko together.

While I enjoy "Mako is useless with people" and "Reiko is a quisling" the Rehabilitation of Wu is a plotline I find irritating, like sand down your airsuit (I'll bet that happens!). I'm glad he's useful. Please stop saying "Oh NOW you'll be a good king!" no he fucking won't, UGH. Maybe in the British "does nothing but wave and go on parades" sense, but I am not the biggest fan of that setup, because it's very expensive and that money could acutually be helping people. But whatever. Earth Kingdom/Empire/Republic will hopefully get good leaders who are NOT him actually doing things. And are also not the Dai Li or a secret cadre of unaccountable ministers.

Am I the only one who caught Tahno's cameo? Along with Homeless Dude! Who saved his nemesis, the Park Cop! And probably some others from Season 1 that I didn't catch.

Oh, Bataar Jr.. If you survive, I hope that you settle down with a nice non-bender girl somewhere. Or boy. And make nice buildings. But first, you need to be really pissed and heartbroken and give Asami the plans to that giant robot.

Although I am also hoping for a AT-AT style takedown of that robot. Though it would make more sense to actually slice its legs off. Cables would not do it.

The haplessness of the EE soldiers. "He's not here, sir." Aw, such polite invaders.

Meelo backs down for no one. Except beautiful Korra.

I don't think anyone died in that blast that took out the ships or at interrogation site. The only definitively dead folks are the ones in the first blast at the outpost. Poor bastards. The others you have deniability...the airbenders were rescuing them. In real life, of course, there would definitely be deaths there, though.

The blast DID take out all the hummingbird mechs, though. So that's a wash.

Aw man, the next one is the last one. I have feelings. There better be some comic books.

If they were smart, they would have already had them in production so people could start pre-ordering them December 20th. I get the feeling, though, that it may take a year or two before we get the opportunity to revisit Avatar Korra. It took four years for ATLA to return in comic form, but here's hoping that the success of those will lead to a quicker turn around on Korra.

Because if I looked at that clip, then it's TOO SOON. Oh my god, too soon. Too soon, and then the last FanFare thread will close and shut up I'm not crying you're crying.

Well, there are no Fanfare posts for Books 1 and 2 of Korra, and ahem, none whatsoever for ATLA. (I'm smelling re-watch!) Depending on how Avatar fans on Fanfare want to handle it, there could be Avatar related posts going up here for at least another year or more!

Am I the only one who caught Tahno's cameo? Along with Homeless Dude! Who saved his nemesis, the Park Cop! And probably some others from Season 1 that I didn't catch.

Those were the only ones I caught, but now I'm wondering if I need to go back and look closer. Perhaps with regard to previous street scenes. It'd make sense and be a nice nostalgic touch if they reused some of the same background art for street scenes, i..e, same locations.

The Tahno cameo completely failed to tell us if he got his bending back via Korra. I really hope he did. Even though the Wolf-Bats were crooked. Also I want to know; did pro-bending continue? Will there someday be enough airbenders to have air added to the teams (and how awesome would that be?)

I am up for an ATLA rewatch, though that is an epic undertaking. So many episodes. So many feels.

Pretty sure one of the street scenes was the lady who watched Korra beat up the Triads in Season 1...her hat looks familiar.

I actually just finished Book 1 of AtLA recently (because I insisted my husband rewatch it before he saw Book 2 of ALoK), but I am totally all over starting it up again.

Wait until the thread for the finale locks up and then go back to two siblings and an iceberg?

The beauty of fanfare....there is no lock up (fanspeak goes on forevah......echo....). But, how about I start a post over in the FanfareTalk and we can figure out a good timing on when to start ATLA? Likewise, whether there's a desire to handle a rewatch for Korra Books 1 and 2 (since Fanfare burst into existence after those two aired), before or after that endeavor.

I've been one of the people who *wanted* to see this ever since Little Ba Sing Se, but I think you're right at this point. It would have taken more effort than they've put into it by now. And the Earth Kingdom really deserves more at this point.

I could hope that maybe in the conclusion of the show, Wu will go the King Kuei/Zuko-alone route and opt to travel the world as a commoner in order to grow a bit. I'm not sure that's in the cards, though.

I'll be content with Wu simply being a ceremonial monarch, and perhaps, that will be his true character development to realize that no, regardless of what everyone is telling him, he wouldn't be a good king.
