Anything For Jackson (2020)

In a darkly comedic take on entitlement, two grieving grandparents attempt to resurrect their dead grandchild.

After losing their only grandson in a car accident, grief-stricken Audrey (Sheila McCarthy) and Henry (Julian Richings), a doctor, kidnap a pregnant patient with the intentions of putting Jackson's soul inside her unborn child. Unsurprisingly amateur satanism doesn't go according to plan.

Basically this entire review nails what makes this such a great horror film. I tried and failed multiple times to find a pull quote so I'm just linking the entire thing. It's fairly brief so worth a read.

I think my favorite little moment is when Sheila McCarthy puts handmade "handcuff cozies" on to relieve the pain of her hostage. Such a perfectly little nod to how the entitled attempt to "help" the less privileged while ignoring how they are responsible for causing larger problems.

Embarrassingly unavailable in Canada without a VPN, but I managed to watch it this weekend. Excellent straight-laced scary film. Great fun seeing Sheila McCarthy in a genre film, and that third act is a corker!

I finally watched this, what a great little movie! I really loved the bits of wry humor throughout, like the Satanists meeting in the back of a public library and the one guy living in his mom's basement.
