Supernatural: Man's Best Friend With Benefits

James Frampton, an old friend of Sam and Dean, has become a witch. Now he's supposedly killing innocent people.

Quotes

Sam: [talking about what he thinks is a stray dog that wandered into their motel room] Okay. Before you get pissed off, look, I just want you to know this isn't my fault. She just showed up at the door, okay? Didn't track in any mud. Just wanted her belly scratched. I figured maybe she could stay tonight, and we'd try and find her a home tomorrow. [opens the door and they both see the "dog" has turned into a beautiful woman]
Dean: She can stay the night.

James Frampton: Portia? This is about her?
Spencer Wallis: Can you imagine the insult when she chose you? I wanted her as my soul mate the moment I saw her.
James Frampton: She was meant to be my familiar.
Spencer Wallis: Oh, she's way more than "familiar", isn't she? When she picked you as master, I endured it. But when you two went all Bella and Edward...

Portia: James is a cop with a spotless record. He's used his skills for nothing but good. So why don't you lose the ignorant bigotry for maybe two seconds and give him a shot?
Dean: That was incredibly hot.
Portia: [huffs, looks at Sam]
Sam: It was pretty hot.

Phillippe LeChat: [James confronts him angrily after finding out he lied to the cops] Please, don't hurt my face!
James Frampton: I'm not interested-- [Phillippe's neck spontaneously breaks, James turns to see Spencer]
Spencer Wallis: He was always spineless. Now literally.

Drexyl: There is, however, a lot of chatter about our James.
Portia: What kind of chatter?
Drexyl: That he's gone ripper.
Dean: As in "Jack the"?

Sam: We do owe him.
Dean: The guy saved our lives *once*, Sammy. It's not like the guy...
Sam: Saved our lives?

Dean: I got to ask. I can't help but wonder...
Portia: Which came first: dog or girl?
Dean: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I'm just curious as to which one you consider yourself, mostly.
Portia: This have anything to do with what I told you about James and me last night? How you're imagining it?
Dean: What? No, that's.... Yes.

James Frampton: A witch can "go" to a place without having to go to a place.
Dean: What, like phone sex?

Dean: Wow, of all the lame-ass things you've ever said; that's gotta be the lame-assiest.
Sam: I'm sorry, but I happen to think Shemp was a funnier Stooge than Curly.
Dean: Curly was a freaking genius.
Sam: I always found Curly's work a bit obvious.
Dean: It's supposed to be obvious, man. They're Stooges.

Portia: We have an unusual relationship. Familiars aren't supposed to be sexually involved with their witches.
Dean: Understandable, you know, considering that you're a... well, and that he's... That's... [turns to Sam] Little help here?
Sam: [shakes his head no]

Sam: You know, I've been going over this and over this. Asking myself, "Why doesn't he trust me?" And it occurred to me finally. It's not that you don't trust me. It's that you can only trust you.

Sam: [to Dean] By the way, I gotta hand it to you. It's been fifteen hours since Portia mentioned her night with James and not one bestiality joke out of you.

Drexyl: They're gonna give James two choices: leave or the full hara-kiri.
Dean: Suicide?
Drexyl: Witches appreciate a grand gesture.

Trivia

Spencer refers to James' relationship with Portia as being all "Bella and Edward". This is a reference to the protagonists of the Twilight series of books and novels. The Twilight movies were filmed in the lot right next to the Supernatural lot in Vancouver.

The cat familiar whom Dean is introduced to in the witch bar is named Philippe Lechat, which means "the cat" in French. This is a shout out to the Belgian comic Lechat by Philippe Geluck.

The name James Frampton may be yet another nod to the world of rock. Peter Frampton is a well known singer/guitarist.

The witch-killing spell the Winchesters were going to use on James was first introduced in "Shut Up, Dr. Phil" (ep. 7.5). As of yet the spell has not been used to kill a witch except Spencer.

This episode is the halfway point of the series.

Having Portia wear her dog collar when in her human form was a Choice.

Yes, blood is red, but dried blood, like that on Janes’ shirt, isn’t that red. It’s darker and browner.

I swear the casting people went out of their way to find every green/hazel-eyed actor or actress in existence. I mean James is just the latest in a long, long line. I don’t know how many people actually have green or hazel eyes, but whatever the percentage is, the number who appear on this show is far higher than is found in the general population.

Portia should have told Dean to dress up to visit the witches’ club. He looks like rubby-dubby (as some of my family members would say).

As a viewer, I feel cheated. James is new to us but not to Sam and Dean, which is fine, but the way he was introduced and the way they say they know him makes me feel like I missed something.

Not only was the collar a Choice, but it was a poorly executed one. I was so distracted by the way it fit and looked.

I'd picked up on that as well. In a show where the two leads have green/olive-coloured eyes, it's pretty noticeable that there's a disproportionate number of other cast members who do too. Possibly the casting director had something of a fetish...?
