In a flashback, Mort escapes with friend Mark (Bradley Whitford) to a cross-dressing retreat in the woods, and becomes captivated with a very accepting woman named Connie (Michaela Watkins). Left alone after canceling her Bat Mitzvah, 13-year-old Ali finds trouble with an older man at the beach.

I'm thinking/hoping that it was (just) a callout to a historic thing. Shows in their conversation afterwards. Current philosophy seems more progressive; that it's a spectrum thing is more widely accepted.

I thought this episode was a particularly good one, and served well by being entirely a flashback. We've seen flashbacks before, but not entire-episode ones, and I think it worked well — especially in that it can show multiple storylines going on at the same time.
