Time Team: Season 22 - Time Team Expedition Crew - Hidden City - Vlochos
April 4, 2023 10:56 AM - Season 22, Episode 2 - Subscribe

Time Team follows show members and working archaeologists Derek Pittman and Lawrence Shaw (co-hosts of the Career in Ruins Podcast on an ongoing dig in Thessaly to uncover the remains of a city that spans over a thousand years of Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine history.

Different than the usual Time Team show, this two part episode follows an ongoing dig of multiple years for part of a two week dig season trying to uncover the history of a "lost" city of antiquity. It's the same though with the mishaps of technology and late discoveries!

This is a working site project spanning multiple years (2016+) as a joint effort between the Ephorate of Antiquities of Karditsa, the Swedish Institute at Athens, the University of Gothenburg and Bournemouth University.

Couple of thoughts on the episode

- nice to see "normal" archaeology in progress and that it goes as screwy as normal for the show
- fascinating that they don't know which city they actually have. I'd have thought all that stuff was mapped and recorded for a city that existed into Byzantine times.
- also great to see them bust out into Greek at one point - reminding us that hey, for all the time the program focuses on the UK, these guys are well educated.
- also, all the reminders that this was under the remit of the Greek Ephorate struck me as both proper and "this is ours, hands off you hoarders and where are our marbles?"

I agree it was nice to have a more normal academic pace (and budget/instrumentation). Thanks for posting this and keeping an eye on the channel for us.

Thanks Janell! They keep making them, I'll keep posting them.

Time Team definitely is one of my favorites in terms of celebrating exploring knowledge and showing how we can rebuild what we know about humanities past. Plus it helped keep me sane through the pandemic. (My wife, when she was worried that I was overly stressed/anxious, would look at me and say "Why don't you sit and watch a Tag Time?" [her jokey name for the series])
