Schmigadoon!: Welcome to Schmicago
April 5, 2023 8:55 AM - Season 2, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Even though they found love after leaving Schmigadoon, Josh and Melissa's relationship has hit another bump, so they attempt to find Schmigadoon again. They end up in another world based on musicals from the 60s through the 80s, Schmicago

Some time after Schmigadoon, Josh and Melissa get married and buy a house in Connecticut. But as time goes on, their lives become lackluster and their attempts to have a child fall short. At one point, they go back to the woods to try to find Schmigadoon again to get their happiness back, but have no luck. On a foggy bridge, their car gets a flat tire and they end up in Schmicago, another magical place that alludes to the musicals of the 1960s through the 1980s, with some of the people they recognize from Schmigadoon taking on different roles. After finding a place to stay at a seedy cabaret, Josh accidentally goes into a dressing room to find one of the dancers, Elsie Vale, dead. They attempt to drive away, but the Leprechaun from Schmigadoon reappears, having messed with their car, telling them they cannot leave until their relationship reaches a "happy end". Josh is falsely arrested for the murder of Elsie Vale.

It's going to take me some time to go through these, admire all the homages, and so forth, but just as a quick first note: Otto Cratt. They didn't even lay it out for us by shortening Octavius. Just bravo writing team for that name.

Oh Jesus will I relate to this season about 100x more than last season.

After I didn't spot Ariana DeBose in the opening number, I said to my girlfriend that they must've filmed this after she won an Oscar… but then she showed up a few minutes later. Impressive.

I still can't believe this show exists, let alone with a second season. It's marvelous, and is destined for a long cultural life, it is so smart and well done and packed with homage and cleverness that it rewards repeated viewing tremendously. Future cult show right here.

DITTO! How can something so clearly made for me and no one else succeed like this? I love it.

You know what this means...if there's a 3rd season we'll get riffs on stuff like Rent and Hamilton.

Or go waaaaay back: H.M.S. Schmigafore

The Schmigcado could have… "issues".

This is so good! I have to mention it to my friend who played Sally Bowles! (Which I may do in 10 minutes.) This somehow works so much better, somehow?!

They’ll have to get through the Schmandrew Schmoyd Schmebber era first.

Season 3 will totally be Le Schmiz.

I was delighted by this. They are nailing both Chicago and Cabaret hard in the first episode.

Oh, I should note: the set design of the club is a dead ringer for the way they designed the venue when Cabaret was at Studio 54 back in the '90s. Although I don't remember the stage being elevated. Otherwise it was so precise it gave me flashbacks.

The flawless mashup of Cabaret and Mein Herr lyrics had me CACKLING, and the choreography was literally right out of Liza's film performance of Mein Herr. Bonus: Video of Aaron Tveit recreating Mein Herr for in Miscast last year (possibly the actual sexiest thing I've ever seen him do, which is sayin' something.)

"Take Me Or Leave Me" with Gavin Creel is my personal turn-on point for Aaron Tveit.

On a related note, MisCast is doing another stream next week, I haven't decided if I want to pay $45 to watch it when I'm at work :P

Should also probably post the um, callback video of them singing separately in 2021 while the original video is inserted, frequently.

Take me or Leave me is a very very close second place, jenfullmoon. Mmmf.

You are a fan of Galavant and I claim my five pounds.

I’m late to the season two party, but I was watching that Aaron Tveit Mein Herr video last night when my husband came in to bed and I slammed my laptop closed like I was caught doing something bad. He kinda side-eyed me and I said “I was just watching Enjolras sing show tunes” and I am not completely sure he believed me.

On a related note, I am still kicking myself for not buying Moulin Rouge tickets when it was previewing in Boston before it hit Broadway.
