The Harbinger (2022)

In 2020, Monique leaves her family's COVID-free bubble to help a friend who's suffering from terrible nightmares, only to discover that she's put herself at risk of another kind of contagion.

Written and directed by Andy Mitton, this movie stars Emily Davis (Mavis) and Gabby Beans (Monique).

Most of the film was shot in Binghamton, New York, as well as in neighboring Johnson City, New York. The Goodwill Theatre, Firehouse Stage, and the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena were some of the locations used in the film.

Not to be confused with the other movie of the same name from 2022.

I had made a hand-written list of horror movies to see and put it in my planner, and when I got to "The Harbinger", I was unsure as to which of the two movies made in the same year with the same name I had selected for viewing. I checked FanFare to see if there were threads for the two movies, there was one for the other one, and everyone in it was hilariously dunking on it, so I figured I must have meant this one, heh.

I really enjoyed this movie and am surprised it hasn't found more of an audience. The idea of being haunted by a terrifying being who will not only eventually drag you away but also erase your entire existence is truly the stuff of nightmares, as is the idea that if you tell anyone about it, they'll experience the same thing. It definitely feels like a movie that grew out of the isolation and fear engendered by the COVID pandemic.

I am hoping for a sequel in which the characters figure out how to stop the thing.
