Minx: Season 1

In 1970s Los Angeles, an earnest young feminist joins forces with a low-rent publisher to create the first erotic magazine for women. The main cast includes Ophelia Lovibond, Jake Johnson, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Idara Victor, and Oscar Montoya. Trailer.

Intelligent, raunchy and funny, with exquisitely detailed sets, costumes, drugs, and dongs. After being renewed Minx was abruptly cancelled by HBO towards the end of S2 production, allegedly for cost-cutting reasons but probably also good old trumper-humper sexism and queerphobia. Then Starz came to the rescue.

I really enjoyed the first season (am just starting to watch the second season now). It reminded me a lot of G.L.O.W., another show that was clever and had interesting things to say about women and feminism and sexuality. Joyce is not unlike Ruth, in the way that both are smart and enthusiastic but inexperienced (at first) and with more than their fair share of self-doubt.

The rest of the cast is great too; I particularly like Bambi, who has perfected the stereotypical ditzy blonde persona she needed in order to survive in a particular milieu, but is also very intelligent and intellectually curious. Loved her relationship with Shelly, Joyce’s sister! Go Shelly, you break out of your stifling middle-class suburban mom straitjacket. Richie and Tina are also great, with a lot of that same smarts-but-stifled thing going on, and underestimated by everyone around them. I want to see them get where they are hoping to go in Season Two.

(Also? Excellent soundtrack. I had never heard of Judee Sill but when they played Jesus Was A Crossmaker at the end of one episode I was entranced.)
