Star Trek: Lower Decks: I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee
September 8, 2023 9:21 AM - Season 4, Episode 2 - Subscribe

It's hard to say what's worse: finding out that people can hear what you're doing in the holodeck, or Moopsy.

My former fellow transporter-mergee Memory Alpha is going to tell you what's what while I triple-check that I erased my holodeck history:

- The title is derived from that of the Hugo Award-winning short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" by Harlan Ellison, who would probably sue if he were still alive.

- Menageries with sentient species include the one kept by the Talosians, which formerly held Christopher Pike, whom Boimler and Mariner have met, although they're not supposed to talk about it, in the first Trek pilot "The Cage" (which got incorporated into the two-parter "The Menagerie"), as well as the Lactran zoo in the TAS episode "The Eye of the Beholder."

- Shaxs and Ransom are wearing the same outfits that Beverly Crusher and Deanna Troi wore in "The Price", and are also working out in front of a corridor-mirror.

- Narj appears to be corn, which reminds me of the Rick and Morty episode where they briefly visit a planet where everything's on a cob.

"I need to replicate some new pants."

--The new ensign what's-his-face

"Humans--we really are the worst."

--Mariner

Poster's Log:

Moopsy's cuteness-to-horror ratio approaches that of Goose the flerkin from Captain Marvel. Could humans survive without bones? Would you want to? Space is full of horrors when it's not weird and/or sexy. And speaking of sexy (and also kind of horrible), no soundproofing on the holodeck? Uff da. At least we have Rutherford putting friendship before promotion.

Poster's log, supplemental: Now we know why we didn't see lower deck Romulans in "wej Duj": it's just too damn depressing.

Easily the funnier, and probably not coincidentally, the less fan-servicey of the two episodes that dropped.

I would die for moopsy, probably due to bone drinking.

They're also replicating Bev and Deanna's full stretch routine.

I was not prepared for the guffaw that followed when I saw they were wearing the exact same outfits as Crusher and Troi. GAWD. That was priceless.

I felt this episode was a little bit mandatory by the writers who wanted to establish that something was going to be different about Mariner's promotion than her past promotions. This was going to signal growth going forward for the character. Spiteful Mariner can be fun, but it's more fun to see Mariner excel in my own opinion.

Pour one out for Narj who tried his best to adhere to all federation menagerie regulations. Who knew corn had bones.

Moopsy was totally going to be the second most dangerous animal on that space station from the second it looked up with big eyes and went, "MOOPSY!"

Rutherford's arch nemesis...one time appearance or reoccurring character? HRM.

I gotta believe Boimler's room being flooded with red light from the nacelle had to be a low key reference to the Kenny Rogers Chicken sign Seinfeld episode. I admit, I was a little disappointed it didn't start to drive Boimler a little crazy before he got his Holosuite adjacent room with incredibly thin walls. Some engineer must have been told he needed one more living quarter and saw this empty space between suites and VOILA.

Livik is Badgey in human form, right? Right?!

Yeah, between the red light and "LIVIK!", it's safe to say somebody was watching Seinfeld between seasons.

Every time Rutherford said "Livik!", all I could think of was "Dinkleberg!" (Fairly OddParents).

And I knew they wouldn't leave Rutherford hanging without his second pip.

Moopsy makes me call out for the Trek/Pokémon crossover we never knew we needed. MOOPSY!

Agreed that this one was funnier than the season premier, but I've loved them both so far. I just wish T'Lyn had shown up in this one - the previous episode made it appear like the foursome might become a five-some going forward, but I guess not.

This started off a little exhausting for me, but it grew better after they reached the menagerie. I do agree it held together better than the first episode.
