Star Trek: Prodigy: First Half of the Season (S02E02-S02E10)
July 23, 2024 6:23 PM - Season 2, Episode 2 - Subscribe

The young crew from Season 1 (plus a Vulcan newcomer) do their best to safeguard the timeline. There may also be hijinx.

Memory Alpha can't remember what the Loom destroyed.
  • Kudos to those of you who stayed un-spoiled about a certain reprised role
  • Is it just me or is embodied Zero kinda queer? Is it warm in here?
  • OMG tribbles

I hope I did this right! It's my first FanFare post so be kind.

Someone suggested doing a post for the half season back in the previous post, and nobody seemed to have done anything yet. So here you go!

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for posting this. I have LOVED this season so far! The characters continue to grow. Old favorites, like the EMH, are perfect. And I love that we are getting other species regulars among the adult crew, like an Andorian and a Tellerite. I cannot pick a favorite character among the kids because I love them all! I am totally here for all the mystery, but Bloodthirsty Tribbles gets my vote for most fun episode of the season so far.

It's a really well plotted series, and I like that once thrown into the mix, M'jel's down for shenanigans.

So let's see, the bulletpoint list of "gosh" from the first half:

  • Nova squadron!
  • The ship's counselor is a Tellarite. Truly, Starfleet can do anything.
  • Jellico bein' Jellico.
  • Holoclone Hijinx!
  • A Lurian in Nova Squadron! Who also never said anything, did they?
  • Planetary evolutionary computer!
  • Wesley Crusher! Travelers! Assignment Earth! *squeeeeeee*

There were more just little one off jokes in passing that I'd have to rewatch the whole season to remember what made me laugh out loud in nerd recognition the first time through, but sooooo much.

I mostly enjoyed this season, but I was really thrown by the animation of the human characters—it was just sooo stiff and stilted, like they were doing one of those fan films animated in a video game engine. Knocks me out of the action every time, which made it hard to stay engaged.

Super happy to have Michaela "Amethyst" Dietz voicing Ma'Jel.

So many Easter Eggs (Gary Seven's office was so so good), great writing, GREAT voice acting... this season really stepped up the game.

I'm really glad Prodigy's second season was able to see the light of day.

For me, Prodigy and Lower Decks have cemented my opinion that animation is a terrific, and terrifically under-used, medium for telling Star Trek stories. We get to see this wonderful universe in its grandeur and diversity that live action productions struggle with: not just multi-species crews, megafauna, and other special effects that would strain TV budgets but also a sense of deep continuity and connection with the narrative mythos that the TV series haven't leaned into as much as they could.

The Loom bear a resemblance to the multidimensional threat that was used to conclude continuity of the post-TNG novels ahead of the Picard TV series.

Time travel has not been my favorite theme in Star Trek (or SF in general), but I'm on board, especially if it gives the character of Wesley Crusher a better sendoff than what's come before.
