The grand premiere of the Tokyo Blade stage production continues! The Kana and Akane acting rivalry comes to a head as the two have their first big scene together.

After the focus on Melt last episode, this one is Akane's. We start off with some more scenes from the play, and get to the scene where Akane's character is first introduced. We go into a flashback of Akane's childhood, seeing Kana on TV for the first time and being absolutely mesmerized. Her parents encourage her to go into stage acting so that she can get over her shyness while also becoming more like her newfound idol.

There's a montage of the beginning of Akane's career as a stage actor, her working hard during rehearsals mixed in with some triumphs and disappointments of her first few performances. Akane continues her admiration of Kana, even getting her long hair cut short to match Kana's bob and choosing outfits that are similar. At an audition, a member of the crew mistakes young Akane dressed in an outfit based on Kana's style for Kana herself, and lets it slip that the auditions are just a sham and that Kana has already been selected for the role. The real Kana, also nearby, has a confrontation with Akane. Akane wants her idol to speak out about how unfair this situation is, but the Kana the jaded veteran tells her that this is simply the way the industry works and that she is just grateful for the work. Kana is incensed at Akane's idealism and knocks the beret off of her head, telling her to stop copying her style.

After this confrontation, Akane is motivated to learn more about what exactly happened to Kana for her to have such a tarnished view of the industry. She starts getting into psychology, and incorporates her new interest into style of acting.

We return to the play, where Kana's and Akane's characters have their first confrontation. Akane is determined to out act her former idol, and to her surprise Kana lets her have the spotlight. This is something we've seen last season and this season, where Kana has gotten so used to adapting her style and making herself easy to work with that she no longer tries to claim the spotlight and instead is always focused on making the actors around her look better.

After the scene ends, Akane is frustrated at the results. She wants to beat Kana, but not this Kana that's already given up. Aqua says that he has a plan to draw out the true Kana so that Akane can have the competition she truly wanted, and that's it for this week.

I loved this episode.
  • interaction between the characters in the stage show
  • communication between the actors, through the medium of acting (portrayed via voiceover)
  • internal mental state of the actors
  • the inner children of the actors
When all of this action on different levels came together, I got goosebumps.

I also loved when Akane said that Kana's spirit was crushed by adults who just wanted an actor that's easy to work with and makes other people look good, and then it cuts to the director saying how great it is that Kana holding back to let Akane shine. You are the bad adult!

Honestly, this show really feels like it's been firing on all cylinders since Aqua's panic attack in Episode 4.

The story so far has done a great job of focusing on both the inter and intra personal conflicts while also heightening the drama by incorporating the atmosphere of a battle shounen anime. I'm really impressed how the show can make me forget that I'm watching, and I don't mean this in a dismissive way, what is ultimately a teen drama. Even Akane's desire here not just to beat Kana but to beat the strongest version of her feels like the exaggerated swagger of a battle shounen protagonist.
