Dandadan: It's A Granny Vs. Granny Clash!
December 17, 2024 1:13 PM - Season 1, Episode 3 - Subscribe

Turbo Granny might think she has the upper hand over Momo after she passes out, but she's about to find out that as powerful as the girl is, she pales in comparison to her grandmother Seiko, a medium of no small skill (or temper)...

And in this episode, we finally get introduced to (one of) our "mentor" figures - Momo's grandmother Seiko, who is quite the skilled medium. We start off with her on a local access show using her powers to deduce the secrets a local male celebrity has been hiding (like his age and marital status, in a gender swap of the sort of double life female idols are expected to live in Japan.) Of course he denies all this, and so Seiko leaves the studio. On her cab ride home, the driver presses her buttons the wrong way, and so we get to see another of her core aspects - her hair-trigger temper, as she points out to said driver that if he doesn't let her out, his omen will be "death by spirit medium."

This, of course, leads up to Seiko arriving home in just enough time to witness Turbo Granny looking to do something...untoward to Momo - and for us to get reminded of a throwaway comment about Seiko almost killing one of her granddaughter's exes as she uses an exorcism technique to attack the malevolent spirit. What follows is a short, pointed demonstration of why Seiko is not to be fucked with, as she uses her skill and power to run rings (quite literally) around the yokai, trapping her in a spiritual barrier before concluding the fight decisively.

We then get a time skip with Momo waking up, and then running down to find her grandmother laughing at a TV show, ignoring her demands about the state of Okarun. Fearing the worst, she rushes out to the outbuilding to find...Okarun safe and sound, under one of Seiko's wards. With that, they explain the recent happenings to Seiko, who continues to exhibit extreme denial of the existence of aliens. However, she does believe in Momo's powers, and notes that with the sort of spirits they're dealing with they both need to train themselves to use their powers more effectively to deal with Turbo Granny - a spirit that she knows quite well, as well as her threat.

Unfortunately, time is something they don't have when Turbo Granny asserts herself when Momo's grasp on her slips while Okarun uses the bathroom - an attack that breeches Seiko's wards and gets the medium's attention. With her threat making it clear she's not playing, Seiko sends the two off on a very dangerous game of tag with a rather pissed off spirit. And as she does, she hugs her granddaughter tightly, before praying for their safety.

And because we do deserve nice things, animation YouTuber Swamp Jawn has breakdowns of the series' animation as well as the show's OP.

Another nice bit of character reveal from Seiko; when the news announces that nearly all her divinations about the 'boy' idol were correct, she harps on the one they didn't (and disproving someone's favorite food is practically impossible.)

Seiko's favorite show, Bakatono-sama, is a creation of Ken Shimura, who died the year before the manga started.

This show/manga loves to play with shōnen tropes. We effectively get a training arc announced (twice!) and immediately afterward the rug gets pulled and it's off to Turbo Granny's home turf.
