I really expected the reveal to be that inmates were going to work as secondary guards to fill in the regular guards' cut hours and create a caste system. Kind of glad it didn't go there, but I'm not sure giving 40 random inmates access to scissors and needles is the best idea, either.

I too thought it was about them guarding other inmates, but in hindsight, they did foreshadow this turn of events.

Feels like the show is going out of the way to paint the new corporate overlords as disinterested, uncaring, unaware dolts. I have to imagine that they have some awareness of basic risk management techniques around their workforce as this isn't the first time they've done this.

I was guessing it would be call center work, which is actually a real thing that happens in a couple of US prisons, incredibly enough. Of course, if they tried to do that on the show, people would say it was unrealistic and unbelievable.

In some ways I think a call center is more believable than a sewing company? But maybe that's just because I read the articles you linked to.
