Farscape: Mind the Baby (Part 2)   Rewatch
September 19, 2015 12:42 AM - Season 2, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Crichton, Aeryn and D'Argo are stranded in an asteroid field while Scorpius searches for them. Their safety depends on Crais, who is nearby in Talyn. Aeryn teaches Crais how to control the young Leviathan—the only thing she can offer in return for the lives of her friends. When Moya returns to the asteroid field to look for her offspring, and Crichton decides to remove Crais from control of Talyn, Scorpius finally sees his chance to strike. [via]

Some favorite John and Aeryn shippiness in this episode--first this exchange:

John: I have a question. How many times have we saved each others' lives?
Aeryn: I've lost count.
John: Safe to say more than once?
Aeryn: Sure.
John: Right, and how many times have you and I been close?
Aeryn: (glances at D'Argo before smiling and whispering-) Just the once.
John: (embarrassed, he whispers back-) Uh, nonono, not that kind of close.
Aeryn: (embarrassed, loudly-) Oh. Um. Friend close.
John: Yes.
Aeryn: (clearing her throat-) Um, er - More than once.
John: Yeah, well, whatever our relationship is. We should be in a place where we can trust one another. I think you're holding something back.

Also, I love the end of the episode where they are nuzzling each other as Aeryn leans back into John's arms while sitting in Pilot's den, which is echoed in "Mental as Anything" (the best part of that episode, IMO).

I really feel for Aeryn in this one. It's implied that she's being shady with Crais when she's actually stuck between a rock and a hard place - she has absolutely no choice but to negotiate with Crais in order to save D'Argo and Crichton, neither of whom she wants to die. For her trouble she gets shouted at by C, tongued by D and ultimately has to watch as Talyn chooses Crais. And there's a jealousy thing with Crichton and Crais. To be snuggling (Aeryn Sun snuggling?!!) John at the end of the ep only indicates how crappy she feels, I think. I don't blame her for yelling at people throughout. Although the 'I love you' exchange with Zhaan always makes me laugh.

I need to know how there is space for Scorpy's brain with those cooling rods.

Crais is back to looking very spick and span, and I did like how he used Scorpius to show Talyn how the PKs can't be trusted.

There is a deleted scene that shows Aeryn beating herself up about the decision to trust Crais, and John telling her that she did the best she could and then holding her hand. I wonder if that's one of the reasons they clasp hands when they are (not) saying goodbye.

This is the episode with the first instance of Rock, Scissors, Paper!

I need to know how there is space for Scorpy's brain with those cooling rods.

The reptilian part of the brain is in the lower back part of the brain stem. THANK YOU.

I had to watch this in pieces as time allowed, so it doesn't perfectly gel. I loved Rygel's response to seeing Jon was alive. I'm mixed on Zhaan losing her mind, so to speak, as she's always been a fairly level headed character. I adored Scorpy's instant analysis of Crais' claim that Jon was dead.

And unfortunately, this is the episode where I finally start banging my head over pretty much every bad decision Talyn makes. It's odd that the one true biological family unit we have at this moment is the one that's most dysfunctional, whereas the slapped together misfit family on Moya is tight...generally.

P.S. I still don't know if I found Chiana's freakish leap into Jon's arms cute or ridiculous.

Originally, "Dream a Little Dream" was going to be the first episode of Season 1 (titled "Re: Union" and without the bookend scenes of John and Zhaan in the transport pod). There was concern that not having the characters regroup right away would turn-off the audience, so "Mind the Baby" became the season opener. I think that was a good choice, because "Dream a Little Dream" is an episode I usually skip. Although, Farscape would be even bolder in its fourth season as the entire crew doesn't reunite until the fifth episode!

I have certain opinions about S4, and Aeryn in S4 in particular. But because I'm seeing new things in this rewatch, I'm going to wait until the episodes in question and see if I feel the same way then.
