2016 UEFA European Football Championship: Group Stage, Round 2
June 14, 2016 3:13 PM - Season 1, Episode 2 - Subscribe

Round 1 brought every sort of action to French streets, a few surprises and some great goals.

Group B has one of the highlights of the second round, as Wales play England in a game important for both sides - not only Wales wants an historic win againt their rivals that would put them in the knockout stage, but England has to do a lot better than their lackluster result against Russia to avoid reaching the third round hoping to not fall to the bottom 8 (even if that is highly unlikely). And if you were wondering what how unlikely it was they would be paired together, Sepp Blatter has an idea.

Unfortunately, there are still reports of fights between Russian and English fans (now in Lille), and UEFA might have to do more than rhetoric to end this situation.

Back to football, other highly touted team with a must-win game to avoid the same pitfall as England is Belgium, following their deflating defeat against Italy where they appeared outplayed and outclassed for most of it, while group D favourites Austria and Portugal will try to fix their teams against each other following their poor showings earlier tonight, losing to Hungary and dropping points to Iceland.
Germany and Poland play each other again, after being in the same qualifying group (2-0 for Poland in their opener, at home Germany won 3-1), and in a rematch of the 2004 game at the same stage where Zlatan Ibrahimovic all but eliminated Italy with a back-heel kick in the final minutes, Italy can punch their ticket into the next round.

Russia bring seriously exposed. First Weiss does a great move to pull himself back into play and out of marking, and finish on the counter, and just before half time, Hamsik gets a short corner, sits a defender and makes one unstoppable shot.

Russia is in a hole now.

I rate Giroud. He's really good by the new chance quality stats (expected goals, expected assists), and his overall output across a season is very good. Not really sure why so many people don't rate him, tbh.
posted by that's candlepin at 5:56 PM on June 15, 2016

Yep, Payet has been the best so far; even if the team struggles, he manages to get things done. The game was freakin' intense on the whole, one of the best so far, I'd argue: energetic, full of clashes, passionate. From recent memory, sort of like seeing Atletico play Bayern. None of that ManCity vs Real lazy bullshit. A really good game. Whoever loses in this kind of game, is deemed to be thoroughly disappointed, but I wouldn't take anything away from France; they struggled to score and attack dangerously for long periods, sure, but Albania played excellently. Really, this was the first match of knockout round quality and intensity. Loved it. Hoping for some of the same from England vs Wales today.

I have to say the singing from the stands is terrific. I surprised, I guess, that you don't hear it in all games.
The closest I can think of is at baseball games in NYC, often the stands would offer editorial comments ("Fuuuuuck Youuuuu, Fuuuuuck Youuuu" was not uncommon) but the singing is really - primal. Brings a lot to the experience.

England needs to get better at getting more players involved and open up more space in the offensive moves. Lots of blocked shots and easily deflected passes and crosses because the team was very static.

The minute they put four players on a move they got enough space to get the lead.

18.01 If two or more teams in the same group are equal on points on completion of the
final tournament group matches, the following criteria are applied, in the order
given, to determine the rankings:
a. higher number of points obtained in the matches played among the teams in question;
b. superior goal difference resulting from the matches played among the teams in question;
c. higher number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams in question;
d. if, after having applied criteria a) to c), teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to h) apply;
e. superior goal difference in all group matches;
f. higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
g. fair play conduct in the final tournament as defined in Annex C.5.1;
h. position in the UEFA national team coefficient rankings (see Annex B.1.2.b).

(They really didn't. But they did show up.)

I missed the early game as my lunchtime job hours were moved to an hour and a half earlier and it was busy due to end of term, so I fell asleep after about 20 minutes. Well done Italy though.

Saw some of tonight's games but was at work and obviously Friday is busier, so was in and out making deliveries. But the second game, up to about 25 minutes, Turkey were okay, and then the two goals in two minutes killed them off. For a while I worried they were going to get slaughtered. Well done Spain, first team to score 3 at the tournament, and also through.

Also, thanks for the Guardian link re: Croatia crowd trouble. I came back from a delivery and there were flares on the pitch and the game had been halted and I wondered what was going on, what had caused it.

Actually, here's a more in-depth piece on current Croatian football: it's really about a singular case of (en-)raging corruption.

So, todays games are:

15:00 E: Belgium v Rep. Ireland
18:00 F: Iceland v Hungary
21:00 F: Portugal v Austria

I would love to see Ireland beat Belgium and progress to the next round, and Iceland to win against Hungary, purely to see the underdogs get to the verge of progressing.

Unfortunately for lmf I would like to see Portugal lose, after Ronaldo's mardy episode the other day, and because they should have won and didn't do enough to win the other day!

BBC match previews:

Iceland vs Hungary

Portugal vs Austria

Belgium vs Rep. Ireland

Anyone watching? Come on Ireland, from an England fan!!

Yep! Watching in the house til I meet people at the pub in a bit. Fingers crossed...

Long is taking a bit of a beating from the Belgian defence. Also, when Belgium attack there never seems to be anyone in the box.

Come on Ireland, make this corner pay.

Excellent miss from Hazard!

Again, Whelan kicks ass in defence.

When Ireland do make a decent attack it all seems to break down right at the end.

Some cynical fouling from the Belgians today - maybe they are getting a bit frustrated. Can anyone see Ireland holding out for a draw here?

Poor refereeing there!! Okay, maybe I am a little bit biased...

Good for a laugh: Fifa Team rankings.

Belgium are number 2. Portugal are number 8. Austria are number 10!! (Ahead of England, Italy, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Turkey and Romania!!)

Great break, great finish, shame for Ireland though.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Poor defending there.

Rembrandt scores!

Belgium now pulling out their sweet moves out of the closet.

It has been too easy for Belgium in the second half.

Unusual penalty but well taken. Come on Iceland!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! It's true what they say, it's the hope that kills you.

Iceland almost almost pulled the upset. First letting go the lead with an own goal, and then the free kick rebound deflect inches away from goal.

Hungary looking comfortable going against Portugal in a few days. 4 points should give them a best third, at worst.

Well, time to watch those assholes. At least I managed to avoid the pre-game shows this time around.

Austria is playing terribly. Their midfield can't hold a ball or position. Portugal isn't much better. Lots of low percentage shots, with poor build-up.

At work and busy so missed the first half, but pleased to see it is nil nil.

If no one scores another goal in Group F, Iceland go through to the knockout phase in 2nd place. Here's to three scoreless draws!

unlikely to happen, I know

Well, if Sweden played Sweden, it would be a real possibility.

I wonder what CR7 is going say about today's match? I'm kind of astonished it's 0-0. Maybe I mean I'm surprised Portugal aren't playing better.

I have no idea what it's like to miss a penalty in an important international tournament, but I bet it's bad.

Saw some of the 2nd half but just drove home so missed the last 15 minutes. Missed the missed penalty!!

If both the last of this groups group games are also draws, who would go through?
posted by marienbad at 1:51 PM on June 18, 2016

None of these Group F teams really deserves to reach the knockout phase in my opinion.
I still sympathize with Island as they showed some heart, but those two games today made for a frustrating watch.
posted by bigendian at 2:04 PM on June 18, 2016

Oh man, this team is a total joke. I hope Ronaldo goes away soon, and Sanches fucks up both his knees so we can move on as a team and not some fucked-up cult of personality to sell scarves.

If both the last of this groups group games are also draws, who would go through?
Unless the thing I'm using is wrong, Hungary holds their first place and then Iceland and Portugal go on scored goals, where Portugal has to tie by a goal more than Iceland.

Finishing up the the third round post now.

I really thought Austria was going to be tough nuts at this tournament, having gone through 10 qualifying matches with 9 wins and a draw. And as we've seen twice now, they're ... really crap at attacking. What happened?

So I went back and had a look at their qualifying group. Three teams made it to Euro 2016 from qualifying group G - Austria, Russia and Sweden. All three have underperformed so far, to say the least. So it seems group G was just really, really bad.
posted by brokkr at 2:15 PM on June 18, 2016

Thanks for the analysis, brokkr - you are absolutely right about that. Austria have been devoid of ideas, as have Russia, from what I have seen of them. Sweden were better in the second half against Ireland, but (I have only seen the highlights here so may be wrong) were poor against Italy.

Frankly I would like to see Iceland go through from the group for being the plucky underdogs from a small country.
posted by marienbad at 2:23 PM on June 18, 2016

It doesn't help that the fulcrum of the Austrian team, David Alaba, looks completely exhausted. When he was substituted sometime after the hour mark, he'd only passed the ball 12 times, with 5 of them going astray. Those were shocking numbers for a Guardiola-trained Bayern Munich player.

Russia were also a lot better in qualifying, they're missing their most crucial players due to injuries. That said, they haven't gotten going at the Euros at all.

Round 3. FIGHT

(not you, Pepe)

Just popped in to say yeah, Alaba has been the highlight of Austria's tournament, apart from in the last game. Not sure how they will cope if he doesn't play in their next game.
