Superbowl LI kicks off at 6:30 Eastern/3:30 Pacific, on FOX. Pre-pregame starts at 11 a.m. ET; official pregame at 2 p.m. ET. NFL. FOX. Relive Prince's half-time show from 10 years ago and ponder whether Lady Gaga can live up to it.

If you prefer Superb Owls, well, I got you boo.

I think you want the Fox Sports Go app on the roku, skewed. We used it a couple years ago and it worked fairly well, there was a slight lag so if you don't want spoilers stay off of social media.

If you watch for the commercials, they don't show the same ones as they do on TV. Or they do, but the rotation is different and there were fewer of them, so we saw the same handful every commercial break. I think that was the first year they offered free streaming, so maybe they've improved the variety.

Watching the pregame coverage, and it's so weird and bad, but I keep watching.

They have a red carpet, and are interviewing Tom Hardy. He knows nothing about football, but is rooting for Atlanta because his dog's from there. <3

Here in New Orleans it's kind of a bust since nobody likes the Patriots for the usual reasons, or Atlanta because the Dirty Birds are our longtime rivals. But Bill Maher has set me straight and I'll be rooting for Atlanta, because not only are they nominally at least from our conference it turns out the owner, head coach, and QB Tom Brady of the Pats are all huge fucking Trumpsters.

I watched the rest of the 84lumber ad. A bunch of guys build the wall, the mother and daughter get to the border but the wall is blocking them; the daughter has made a tattered American flag out of plastic bag scraps. They run along the wall, and find the lumber guys put a big door in it (made of lumber), and the mother and daughter push open the door, and the tag line is "The will to succeed is always welcome here."

I think it's anti-wall? But maybe also pro-jobs-for-builders-along-the-boondoggle-wall? Not totally clear.

(That first half stressed me out so much I almost threw up so I'm happy to tell you the end.)

posted by zachlipton at 5:41 PM on February 5, 2017 [4 favorites]

That 84 Lumber ad has some strange background -- AdWeek:
In the run-up to the Super Bowl, Magerko [owner and president of 84 Lumber] said the ad shouldn’t be considered provocative at all. In fact, she says she voted for Donald Trump in the election, and the image of the door in the wall comes directly from Trump himself, who said he wanted a “big beautiful door” in his wall, for legal immigration. (See the video below.)

Imagine if you had left your own party early, and you were cheering for the Patriots

I can imagine it. Pats fans are few and far between when you are overseas. Usually it's anybody but the Pats. And having to watch it in a bar at 6:30 AM with normally indifferent folks is just so disheartening. This year, it was a really decent bar (thanks Eric) and more than a smattering of Pats fans, at least 7. The guy next to me, from Newton, left during the 3rd quarter, he'd booked a bicycle tour. We joked about how that's all the Pats needed to make a comeback, so here's to you Jeff, for taking one for the team.

Please, I know, I've read it too, but for those of us who are fans and who are scared shitless about what's happening, give us this one small glimmer of joy. When they showed Pence on tv, the entire bar united in booing him.

There are two very simple statistics that I think sum up this game.

Number of New Orleans Saints Superbowl Victories: 1
Number of Atlanta Falcons Superbowl Victories: 0

As a Saints fan I did everything in my power to make sure that both teams would lose, and when it went into OT all tied up I thought maybe my chanting and incantations had taken root. Unfortunately the infinitesimally lesser of two evils won out.

I gotta say it was nice to have the option to root against both the offense and the defense on every single play.

To be fair, the Falcons were running a personal email server.

Helluva game of sportsball last night. Repugnant politics aside I like Brady's way of getting things done BUT goddamn I was hoping that the Falcons would win. By the fourth quarter my only consolation was that the Falcons' collapse was making my Vikings' four SB appearances look heroic.

The Falcons scored the most popular points, of course. That's just not how the game works.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

I've been saying that so much lately that making it into a t-shirt is starting to sound like a good idea.

I don't know when the winning team meets the President or if it's already happened or what. I have read that Martellus Bennett said he would not meet with Trump which considering the extremely tight control Belichick exerts over his players' public actions and statements, surprised me with its candor. Good for Bennett.

Moreover I feel that the President they really should be meeting with is Obama. Trump just oozed in at the end of the season for one game.

It usually happens months after the fact. Usually. A notable exception: this year's World Series Champion Chicago Cubs requested a winter White House visit instead of the normal early spring timeframe. One does not have to wonder too hard at that motive.

Falcons fans/Patriots foes, it could have been worse, you could have agreed to date some random on Twitter if the Patriots ended up winning the game.

Devin McCourty also does not feel welcome at the White House.

Dont'a Hightower and Chris Long are the 3rd and 4th players to decline to visit Trump's White House. It's weird, I like Chris Long almost as much as I dislike his father.
