Warning: there are some particularly heart-breaking lines and moments in this episode, particularly Ernestine's memory of her young son asking "will you do this for me," as she washes the heavily whipped back of her husband.

It was good to see the vision of the grinning Sam (Johnny Ray Gill), because it's nice to see a happy face, even if it's a ghost reminding you that your strategies for keeping yourself and others safe never actually work.

A more complete quote from Patty Cannon: "Well, you can't make a legend out of the truth. At least, not one worth publishing." Patty Cannon's biographer, Elden Donahue (Michael Trotter) is an interesting character, moreso in this episode - did he have any idea of who he helped by the river? He seems sharp, and given that they're tracking The Black Rose, it seems like he could put 2 and 2 together. And on Patty Cannon's legend, the one that Elden tells her in this episode is not the one written of her putting a child into the fire. Her recorded action is more blatantly cruel without purpose, beyond silencing an annoyance.

And now August Pullman (Christopher Meloni) is back. Hmm. Was he a forced laborer, or the overseer?

Still having trouble seeing the actors in nighttime sequences, is it just me/my tv? The scene with Rosalee in a grave was just a blur for the majority of it. I don't remember it ever being an issue in season 1, and they had plenty of night shoots.

I thought from Patty's last speech the final reveal was going to be that Cato was on her payroll, so I didn't see the August twist coming.
