MeFi Horror Club #16: Dead Alive (aka Brain Dead)

It pains me greatly to call something from 1992 a "retro" movie, but I couldn't call it "recent" with a straight face, so working within our parameters, it's "retro."

Anyway, before Peter Jackson made King Kong or those Hobbit movies, he was making oddball horror stuff in New Zealand. This film, originally titled Brain Dead, but retitled Dead Alive in many countries (including the US) is the Citizen Kane of gore comedies.

This movie has positively zero streaming availability, as near as I can tell. But that's okay, because you should really own this. Go buy it. Seriously.

Oh and before I forget, the plot:
A young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors.

I still remember the first time I saw this: my friends were all talking about how I should get 'up to speed on the work of Peter Jackson,' since he was in charge of the new Lord of the Rings movies that were coming out soon.

... man, I miss hanging out with those guys.

You know what would be cool for an upcoming retro pick? Haxan.

The Whelk has the next wild card pick, btw. I'll be announcing the extra October picks this weekend. They're pretty much the ones I mentioned I was leaning towards.

Do I get extra points for owning it on videotape?

I love this movie so much. I saw it when I was like 10 or 11, the perfect age for all the gore. I only learned it was Peter Jackson a couple of years ago and had a good chuckle.

I believe its still probably the goriest movie I've ever seen.

When I lived in California in the early 2000s, I organised a screening of this at the community college I had been attending. Five people came, and three of them berated me for picking such a weird movie.

Still one of my favourites.
