Elsewhere, Team Avatar in the midst of aquatic recreation of their own encounter for the first time the assassin hired by Zuko.

Determined to find Appa, Aang's activities draws the ire of Long Feng, who uses a brain washed Jet to try and trick Team Avatar into leaving the city. Instead, Jet's return leads to the discovery of a hidden Dai Li facility beneath Lake Laogai. Meanwhile, Zuko discovers the Avatar's presence and is forced to make a life changing decision. The new inhabitants glide on the creations of the Mechanist, an inventor with little problem removing the old to make room for the new. The gang unexpectedly crosses path with Bato, a member of Katara's and Sokka's tribe and part of their father's war party. Their excitement at the reunion stirs emotions within Aang that leads to conflict. Elsewhere, Zuko and Iroh meet the bounty hunter June, whom they hire for her ferocious and unrelenting animal companion, part mole and part something else, with the ability to track down anyone by their scent over a continent. Sokka and Katara fall ill and Aang is forced to leave them under the care of Appa and Momo while he searches for a cure. The urgent quest is interrupted when Aang is captured by Commander Zhao, but just when all seems lost, a mysterious blue-masked fighter appears to the rescue. Also reappearing, Uncle Iroh's tsungi horn and the red jeweled monkey statue.

The gang's journey northward brings them to the Great Divide, the Grand Canyon of the Avatar world, and into the arguing midst of two rival Earth Kingdom tribes, the Gan Jin and the Zhang. In a bid to display the Avatar's expected ability to unite people, Aang volunteers to guide the two groups through the canyon and through their troubles. [more inside]
