Netflix's The Ultimatum is back with a new iteration, The Ultimatum: Queer Love! Five couples participate in the show, and the cast of The Ultimatum: Queer Love is made up exclusively of women and nonbinary people. Each of them identifies as queer and finds themselves at a crossroads in their relationship. One partner is ready to settle down and get married, and the other (for a whole host of different reasons) has their doubts. The Ultimatum: Queer Love follows each unsure couple as they get brutally honest with one another, date other people in an attempt to figure out what they really want and potentially choose another partner altogether. One Mississippi: Two Mississippi  Season 2, Ep 0

Season two of Tig Notaro's Amazon series takes us deeper into the lives of Tig's step-father, Bill, and her brother, Remy. Meanwhile, Tig continues to speak honestly on her radio show as Tig and Kate's relationship perpetually redefines itself. Politics come into play, and a Mississippi changed by the election of Trump hangs grotesquely in the background. Also, trigger warning. Very upsetting but necessary discussions of molestation, abuse, and harassment, including scenes of deplorable men being deplorable, also occur this season. And in spite of all that, the show continues to be a funny, even joyous celebration of love and compassion. [more inside]

Movie: The Big Sick

Ever since his bit about the drug cocktail called "cheese" was featured on This American Life in 2010, I've been intrigued by Kumail Nanjiani. I've seen him pop up with wonderful small parts in Portlandia and Garfunkel and Oates, but now he's made an autobiographical movie (written together with his wife Emily V. Gordon) about struggling against cultural differences and parental expectations while discovering love and pursuing the dream of comedy. It is both deeply touching and hilarious as the cheese bit ever was.
