The Mindy Project: The Devil Wears Lands
October 15, 2014 12:01 PM - Season 3, Episode 5 - Subscribe

Mindy almost gets a ticket, and Peter needs a partner Dartmouth Alumni Beer Pong Tournament to beat Shonda Rhimes, the champ. The doctors make a terrible first impression on new Department Chief of the Hospital, Dr. Gene Fishman (Niecy Nash), so Mindy takes Gene out to make up and get better delivery times. It all goes about as well as most schemes go for Mindy.

Any episode with that much screen time for Dr. Reed (Ed Weeks) is an instant favorite. Loved his take on being a "bro."

My husband was confused when I was laughing so hard at Danny yelling he can't have babies... I guess he missed it when Mindy mumble-cried it earlier. He's no fun to watch with!! Things aren't as funny when I have to explain it!

Peter's panic choosing a new nickname also made me laugh pretty hard. I didn't need the chanting, but the look that crosses his face when he blurts it out and then has to just accept it, felt like pretty much every time I order at a busy restaurant.

Mindy has the same ringtone as me! Oh no, Morgan does too. Also, the weird touch of Mindy setting the new doc's ringtone as "I touch myself".

Love seeing Shonda Rhimes -- especially with the weird explanation of why she's an honored guest at a guy thing.

I had a weird Clean House binge a while ago so I had trouble when Niecy Nash walked into Danny's apartment and didn't immediately go crazy about how beautifully decorated it was. She should also tell Mindy to put two thirds of her clothes out at the yard sale. (No Mindy, don't! You're my short round fashion role model!)

I must admit, I made this episode post before actually seeing the episode, so my enthusiasm was tampered by the A.V. Club review, and I was then skeptical of glowing reviews like the one from Pop Insomniacs.

But in watching it, I was won over by the general fun and not over-the-top zaniness throughout the episode. In re-reading the A.V. Club review, I see that they opened with annoyance at the unnecessary cold open that doesn't add to the story (except the "I can't have babies" comment from Danny), wacky elements ("why would Jean, not Gene-my bad, be spending every night alone at the Statue of Liberty?" She's married, not a solitary single lady) and gaps in context (are Jean and Deborah at a bad place in their marriage? Or is Mindy just that alluring?), but they get into how the episode was still pretty solid.

I enjoyed that he's into Mindy enough that he gets into her crazy schemes to save her butt.

Except at worst, you get food you don't really like in a restaurant, and you can always follow up with a good dessert, while Peter is now known as "Diarrhea" to the frat bros. Wasn't Peter really cocky and certain last season, or the season before? What happened?

I was surprised to see her so reserved and serious for the most part, and where were her giant floral head pieces?

I'm still laughing at her gift of a cactus. "Because I'm prickly?" "No! This cactus might appear prickly on the outside, but inside, it is—*she pricks her finger*—ow! Bitch!"
