Kids from all over the world dream of one day playing in a World Cup final for their countries. Billions of kids have had that dream in the last 88 years. So many dreams and hopes are focused on these 90+ minutes of football. There’s nothing like it in the world, probably never been anything like it in history. Hurray! It’s the World Cup final!

I'm going with 2-0 for France. Maybe 2-1 if it's the fourth consecutive final to reach overtime.

If I’m reading the team lineups correctly both sides are set up as expected. France will have a wide defensive block that allows their front three of Giroud, Griezmann and Mbappé to spring forward when they recover the ball, ready to receive passes from the midfielders. Croatia will try to get their wingers involved, Rebić and Perišić, hoping that they’ll be able to run at French defenders. And there should be an almighty scrum over the control of midfield between Modrić, Brozović and Rakitić on the one hand, and Kanté, Pogba and Matuidi on the other. This is a really fascinating match, tactically. Though to quote a largely forgotten German 19th Century general, Helmuth von Moltke, “no plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force”.

I went to Antwerpen yesterday for the Belgium match... figured to climb the Cathedral tower beforehand, and was able to watch the first goal there - from probably the better part of 500m. The tower shook as various bars nearby and the public viewing crowd exploded.

As someone a bit afraid of heights it was both brilliant and terrifying.

Yeah, the weird part is that I'm watching through plain old cable TV, not a stream. Presumably whatever technology Comcast uses to insert ads into the commercial breaks had a glitch/fat finger error.

There’s a Latinx open-air market in my town that’s usually a reliable source for knockoff Central- and South American national team jerseys (Argentina and Mexico are ubiquitous, Brazil and Uruguay are usually not hard to find, the rest can probably be sourced by asking). So… I’ve settled down now. After the game was done there was much rejoicing in the household and our guests had a splendid time. I got out the champagne bottle I had in the fridge and my girlfriend sent a video of me opening it to my dad who grew up in France. Then my son asked to play rocket and astronaut, with him as the astronaut and me as the rocket, and we zoomed about the living room while the various post-match ceremonies were taking place. Then we talked about the game and our guests bid adieu, but we paused for the very last bit of the Finnish television broadcast of this best World Cup in my lifetime, probably, and certainly the maddest World Cup final of all time, as one of the analysts read a Finnish translation from Eduardo Galeano’s sublime Soccer in Sun and Shadow. I have that book and here’s the text that the analyst read. It’s a fitting coda to such a beautiful month of football:
The ball turns, the world turns. People suspect the sun is a burning ball that works all day and spends the night bouncing around the heavens while the moon does its shift, though science is somewhat doubtful. There is absolutely no question, however, that the world turns around a spinning ball […] A bit of insanity worthy of a better cause? A primitive and vulgar business? A bag of tricks manipulated by the owners? I’m one of those who believe that soccer might be all that, but it is also much more: a feast for the eyes that watch it and a joy for the body that plays it. A reporter once asked German theologian Dorothee Sölle, “How would you explain happiness to a child?”

“I wouldn’t explain it,” she answered. “I’d toss him a ball and let him play.”
Then everyone in the Finnish television studio hugged each other and everyone in our living room hugged each other and that was that. Normal life resumes tomorrow, there’s still some champagne left.

Wait, you guys already saw it? It's just starting for me. Hmm, I think I'll bow out for a bit since I don't know who won yet.

Well, since the game had everything, in a sense we all won. Except the supporters of the losing team. Those won a bit less. One might even argue they lost.

Ancient Greek historians had to deal with the problem that all the different cities had different calendar systems so it was hard to correlate various events. So the historian Timaeus came up with the method of using the four year intervals between Olympic games as a standardized calendar, with individual games identified based on the winner of the stadion race (a two hundred yard footrace), e.g. the second year in the third Olympiad in which Astyatalus of Croton was champion was the period from summer 479 BCE to summer 478 BCE.

Ever since I first encountered the Olympiad calendar system it always seemed weird to me, but as I age I find it much easier to orient myself in my memories when I think of it in terms of World Cup cycles. If I remember that I moved back to Iceland from the US in the first year of Spain's reign as world champions I can very quickly piece together everything else that was happening in my life and world. Four year intervals are easier to manage mentally than decades.

Anyway, that is what I was thinking as the first day of the first year of France's second reign as world champions comes to a close. We're also of course in the fourth year of the US's third reign as world champions, which just goes to show that different calendar systems are still a problem.

Well, just FYI, the guy from Pussy Riot that was a part of this is now in critical condition at a hospital in Germany. Poisoning is suspected.
