Totally and completely unnecessary speech from Mallory the Labor Globalization person had me pumping my fist in the air. All it was missing was a No shit, Sherlock, which admittedly would have been hard to fit into a scene he wasn't in.

I liked that this took time to give Gregson a moment to be deeply insightful about what Sherlock wants versus what Sherlock needs.

More seriously, another thing I liked about this ep was the way they showed Sherlock doing some emotional labor on behalf of Joan at the beginning, a bunch for Marcus as well, then totally dropping the ball when it came to approaching Gregson about Bell's replacement. It illustrates how Sherlock is growing in his relationships, one at a time. He's good at putting effort into maintaining his relationship with Joan, getting better with Marcus, and pretty much everyone else is still basically "Bell-ends." It may seem like he's way more 'normal' from our perspective because he's adapted to accommodate the relationships we see him in the most, but it's still a rough road for anyone else who wants to have any kind of meaningful back-and-forth with Sherlock.

Maintaining relationships and using empathy and putting emotional labor into the world isn't a switch that flips, and it isn't something that can be set right and forgotten. It takes constant input, can be totally different person to person, and is difficult even for someone with Sherlock's intellect.

Also, what's going on with the double episode drop this week? Anyone with network TV access know?

CBS bumped an episode in order to cover Trump's supreme court announcement on July 9th. Because of the serial nature of the show they didn't just skip the episode, they pushed it back to the next week. So the extra inserted episode on Sunday, August 12th, followed by the regularly scheduled Monday showing, was probably intended to once again have Elementary's season end the week before the already announced premiere dates of the shows in their upcoming fall schedule.
