RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars review: Roast in Peace (Dan Selcke for Culturess | Fansided) -- The comedy challenges on Drag Race are getting a little old, but the twist ending is also kind of boring, so… balance?

Damn this episode killed me!!! So much stuff I loved, from Manilla’s lip-synch outfit to Michelle’s eye makeup to all of Valentina’s crazy shit. And the twist! I am with Monet, I don’t want another AS3, I want somebody who deserves it to win.

I also agree with Dan Selcke that they need to mix up the challenges already- no more comedy! Not everyone is Bianca del Rio and that’s OK.

I’m not gagged with the twist because I don’t understand it. They both win! No one is going home! Queens are coming back! Lip sync for your life!

Help?

Also, comedy writing is hard. Even naturally funny people have to write for years to get jokes that make sense. My favorite was Trinity’s anti-joke about Lady Bunny’s parents becoming vegetarian because she’s so ugly. But that doesn’t really count.

I wonder whether the twist is that the next challenge will see either the top one or two eliminated queens (number depending on the lipsticks chosen by Monet and Manila) lip sync against the one or those chosen for elimination for a chance to get back into the competition.

I don't understand why Valentina took off her sunglasses. They were fine to keep on and in line with her character. Her character wasn't FUNNY, but anyway. I did enjoy Lady Bunny being on the show, but found it strange that I didn't remember her previous appearance on the show even though I've seen every season of it - I guess she must have been on Drag U, which I've never seen (and can't seem to track down)?

I am finding the top-queen/bottom-queen edits really heavy-handed this year and it's making me increasingly skeptical of how things are actually rolling out. It basically makes the judging pointless now with all of the sound effects and stone-faced looks from the judges during the challenges making it clear who is in the top and who is in the bottom.

Every time I see Yvette Nicole Brown now I am startled because she is familiar but not after being on Community for five years and then losing a bunch of weight. She looks like she has aged backwards, somehow: she's 47, which she looked close to on Community, but looking at her now I'd place her in her early 30s. What kind of witchcraft???

I kind of understand the comedy challenges - not every queen is a look queen, or a pageant queen, so comedy and musical challenges are included to allow different queens to shine in their elements. Some will be multi-talented (Trixie is a musician, comedian, and has her own uniquely stunning looks, for example), but others just need a different opportunity to shine.

Still, this was a particularly painful comedy challenge. There were some great jokes, but there were more duds than gems.

All I know is that if a shasay'd queen comes back and a current queen goes, that exchange better be Latrice for Valentina.

Also please no more crying Farrah Moan. I just can't do it.

I thought Ru has mostly disavowed any knowledge or remembrance of Drag U., which is probably why you can't find it, urbanlenny.

I'm no longer shocked by no elemination or double elimination episodes, because I know there's a contracted amount of episodes and they'll make up for it by kicking or not kicking someone off. However, I enjoyed how shocked the girls were. Especially when the eliminated queens came back and whoever it was was scared by Bunny appearing in the mirror and just took off running.

You know I don't think Lady Bunny had ever been on Drag Race just as herself. She's always been a sort of in-joke, a bit of a relic from before they went mainstream and were full of gay culture in-jokes.

Speaking of in-jokes, we started kidding around episode one that the produces had switched Valentina's meds with Tic-Tacs, which was in poor taste I know but I'm really beginning to wonder if she's being chemically fucked with by production. Her demeanor is so different from her season and I'm like, starting to worry a bit.

As for the Ruveal, I'm fucking confused too. I'm just gunna sit on it until next week.

I should probably say something positive. Probably Manila's runway contour. That was pretty positive. I also really liked Monet's routine and I have no qualms with the two of them being top two.

Apparently Lady Bunny was asked to be a judge of Drag Race but declined and she later was a Dean and judge on Drag U (under Television.

Damn, I need to see this Drag U business.

Oh boy it's on Amazon. I probably can't buy it because I'm in Canada

I think Valentina has 100% bought the Valentina story (and why wouldn't she? Her next big gig is Rent Live) and I think she wants as much airtime as possible, so she's acting in a way she thinks of as "charming and a bit kooky," but it turns out just plain weird.
