SPIRIT OF 99 PHASE TWO
November 12, 2014 9:06 PM - Subscribe

THE SPIRIT OF 99 VIEWING CLUB is still going strong (natch) but I'd like to know where we're going. We need a new schedule and possibly a new person in charge (carsbonb did great work here). What have we learned and how should be proceed? What 1999 movies would you like to talk about?

The Sixth Sense, The Green Mile, Fight Club, Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me, Boys Don't Cry, South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut, Cider House Rules.

The Robin Williams Movie Club is doing Bicentennial Man on Saturday, June 6, 2015 - that seems like a long time from now but thought I'd plant a seed if you want to do a cross-over thing. nubs is doing it.

Doing a great job, I'm enjoying reading the write-ups and links. Also nice shout-out to carsonb and tag.

I wouldn't mind volunteering for The Green Mile if you're looking for volunteers.

[the IMDB 1999 by popularity list from the original SO99 post FWIW]

a) Slow it down, 2 a week is too many too fast.
b) Delegate delegate delegate; I would expect most people willing to nominate a movie would also be willing to post it. Just give 'em instructions on what to tag etc.

jcifa's list, plus Deep Blue Sea ("you ate my bird!"), Man on the Moon, The Insider, The Straight Story. (Haven't seen the last 2, always meant to.)

(Seconding that twice a week is a breakneck speed. The Robin Williams thing is every other week and this is a manageable pace for me.)

I would love an excuse to see Man on the Moon - it's one of those movies I keep meaning to watch.

And did Fanfare do Galaxy Quest already? (Maybe I'm thinking of the recent "oral history" FPP.)

I am very okay with doing Galaxy Quest

(if Someone Else wants to do one every Tuesday for a while I would not be averse)

Oh, thanks for the shoutout The Whelk! Writing that post was fun, and I'm totally down for more. 1999 was the last year I graduated anything, and when I consider myself to have become an adult with adult considerations and stuff. And there were just so many great flicks that year!

Movies I wouldn't mind writing posts for:

The Ninth Gate
Man on the Moon
The Straight Story
South Park: BL&U
Austin Powers

That's just The One I've been brooding over and the rest are several that others have mentioned. I need to peruse that list.

Tuesdays are a stretch for me because I already work 14 hours of those days, but Thursdays are eminently doable.

It can totally be thursdays

I am all about Jawbreaker and Go.
posted by yellowbinder at 10:15 AM on November 13, 2014

Ohhh Go, I hadn't thought of that - it's a lot weirder than people remember.
posted by The Whelk at 10:21 AM on November 13, 2014

OK so I'm gonna skip today and hope we can put up a schedule for the next few weeks/months/erm.

But I'll kick start that process and volunteer a post for The Ninth Gate on next Thursday, November 20th.
Part of my research is going to be a detailed consultation with the mod team about ways to hopefully steer the post away from becoming a referendum on its director.

carsonb & The Whelk, I'm happy to help out with the posting/scheduling if you'd like. Can do Tuesdays or Thursdays (or whatever, as long as it's only once a week).

For the purposes of just getting a schedule out, lets set up a pool of movies and a rough timeline and people can claim spots.

Working on the idea that carsonb is doing THE NINTH GATE (which I just saw that should be interesting) on NOVEMBER 20th, I'll claim THE STRAIGHT STORY for the 27th to give everyone time to pick/watch/gather links (Also I have a KILLER Kreider essay to link to that everyone seems to like)

So as of now it's

NOV 20th: THE NINTH GATE - carsonb
NOV 27th: THE STRAIGHT STORY - The Whelk

And the movie pool is:

Go
Man on the Moon
The Insider
South Park: BL&U
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Bringing Out The Dead
The Green Mile
Galaxy Quest
Boys Don't Cry
The Cider House Rules
Deep Blue Sea

First come first serve, we'll see how it works with a once-a-week format for a while.

As for format, start each post with THE SPIRIT OF 99 VIEWING CLUB - then a brief description of the movie. Use the tags spiritof99 and 1999. Include a link to the relevant Ebert review and any other interesting links you find (or don't!). I have a few go-to places to look 0 The Nostalgia Chick's ring of reviewers for one - but usually a quick Google for video and such turns up something. BEST/WORST is up to the individual poster, I don't always include them.

Have at it!

I'll take Cider House Rules and The Green Mile for $500, Alex.
posted by joseph conrad is fully awesome at 4:32 PM on November 13, 2014 [1 favorite]

I'll take Deep Blue Sea under my "you nominated it, you post it" guideline.

And if you're short on volunteers would happily also do South Park and Austin Powers and damn now I look lowbrow but never mind.

(I suggested it above, but I'm not the best person to post Man in the Moon. Have seen it, but I'm British so Andy Kaufman isn't a strong cultural reference for me.)

Slot me in wherever you like.

(Does FanFare still have the same once-per-24h limit as MeFi? The Breaking Bad schedule is nominally Sundays+Thursdays so might conflict; although I don't think anyone would mind if I switched it to Sundays/Wednesdays.)

Since I brought up Go I'll post it, just give me a date! We should get to it by mid-December, one of the things people forget is that it's Christmas-y!

Go IS CHRISTMAS-Y It takes place during a Christmas rave!

So Here's the provisional schedule if no one has any problems

DEC 4th: THE CIDER HOUSE RULES - joseph conrad is fully awesome
DEC 11th: DEEP BLUE SEA - We had a deal, Kyle

I'd be up for posting The Best Man if anyone wants to watch and discuss it.

I was wondering about a followup series. 1989 was kinda meh, but holy crap 1979 was a corker.

The 70s are my favorite era in films and if it weren't for the Robin Williams thing I would already be doing a 70s series.

In fact there's a draft of 70s-related films for an FPP but heaven knows when I'll get the time to do it - between tweeting and stuff.

Christmas post: Toy Story 2?
posted by troika at 8:21 AM on November 14, 2014

Or The World is Not Enough, maybe? Aren't there usually some Bond marathons on tv around the holidays?
posted by troika at 8:24 AM on November 14, 2014

The World is Not Enough does have a character named "Christmas Jones". So there's that.

(British TV traditionally played a Bond film on Boxing Day afternoon, if I remember right. Or was it Christmas Day, with the Bond film on ITV against the Queen's Speech on the BBC? I forget.)
