Fear the Walking Dead: The Hurt That Will Happen
June 13, 2019 6:34 AM - Season 5, Episode 2 - Subscribe
Morgan and Alicia meet a survivor and learn of a grave new walker threat. Meanwhile, the mission is put to the test when one of their own goes missing. Elsewhere, Strand makes contact.
Who knew there would be a crossover with Chernobyl?
Morgan and Alicia don't find Althea (previously snatched by someone when she was investigating that mysterious growler), but they do meet new person Grace, who is behind those warnings about radiation. She's not fooling around, she's tracking down her former nuclear plant coworkers (nicely identified by their dosimeters) and trying to make sure they don't spread that radiation around too much. Dyatlov never would have done that.
The reunion between Strand and Daniel was about as a talky (on one side) as you would have imagined. And while Strand does bring Daniel up to date on Madison and Nick, he doesn't manage to persuade Daniel that he's a changed man, so Daniel won't be helping him with that rumored plane. Strand is sent on his way. (I'm guessing that they'll send in the kid to sweet talk Daniel.)
June and John look around for the kids, but all they find is a cabin full of growlers and a pile of burned-up growler bodies with dosimeters. Grace is disappointed at this inappropriate method of radioactive growler disposal and has to explain to everyone that radioactive ash is bad. (Guess they slept through that bridge of death scene.)
Meanwhile, Luciana is loopy on pain killers, dreaming of learning to play the accordion and generally overexerting herself. She manages to get in touch with Strand (and Daniel) so they are in the loop on things, kind of. She passes out after escaping from growlers (that overexertion), and when the gang gets back together and she wakes up, they find that someone has helpfully chopped off the heads of those growlers and put them up as Halloween decorations.

I forgot that Ofelia is dead, though.
This has become such a strange show without the core family. They seem to have dumped the premise that last season set up (ride the roads and help people). At least they’ve gone with a straightforward narrative this time, I don’t think another season full of flashbacks would have been bearable.

On the other hand, Luciana is starting to feel to me like one of those pro athletes that puts up great numbers, for the like....two games a season that they're actually healthy for, and spends waaay too much time on the disabled list. After she spent so much of season 3 being "the injured one", it'd be nice to give her something else to do to, and maybe establish her post-Nick identity a little better.
Also I gotta give you credit, jimw, you called this a year ago:
They really need to go through all those tapes to see if she’s run into Daniel and/or Ofelia before they turn up again.
