A haunted house and a haunted book stir the imaginations of young wannabe ghost hunters.

There are only five episodes so I posted the whole season even though I only watched the first one so far.

The show is beautiful, and honestly the scene in like the first five minutes creeped me out so bad I almost turned it off. I will watch the other four episodes in the next day or so and come back with my conclusions, but so far so good.

Yeah, I've seen just the first episode and liked it. Agree that first scene did a great job of starting off with a bang. Also like how nobody is just a random character. Even the guy who chases the kids out of his boat turns out to be involved somehow. There's going to be a lot to unpack here.

and a general note - do not fuck with substitute math teachers!

He has got to be the boy who went with his mom begging for his father's body, no?

Well, I've seen the whole thing now, and I'm not sure it lives up to the promise of the opening. I mean it's not bad, but I'm not sure the hype is justified.

The ghost rules seem simultaneously overly mechanistic and explained vaguely at best. Like what is the importance of the little wooden doll? They finally explain why the "ghost" can only appear as Jenny, sort of, but then what the hell was she? She wasn't the Fakeer. She wasn't Jenny. She wasn't a ghost in any meaningful sense. What the heck was she and why did she exist? And what's with that bullshit "oh, no, that's the ghost!" bit at the end where Jenny disappears as the camera moves behind a pillar. Is Jenny supposed to have the ghost's abilities now? Can she blink herself around and crush people's hearts or something?

And it seems like they're setting up a second season with stuff like the unresolved tension between Sam's father and Jenny, and the bit where Jenny tells Doctor Spirit (another big buildup to not very much) that she's Sam's mother. First, of course, they'd have to get rid of Jenny's husband (Peter?) but then I'm pretty sure he went off and killed that woman who was blackmailing him. Was that not a bloody shirt he took out of his bag at the end?

I don't know. I still enjoyed it, but it squandered a lot of the goodwill the first episode built up.
