I get where you're coming from, wabbitwax, but I note that this isn't even the first "on location" episode this season. In some ways it reminded me of the genre episodes of other shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Doctor Who, or Stargate SG-1. If you're going to go down the genre hole, you might as well just jump in and wallow in it. So we got a western Castle episode in all its poker cheatin', rattler shootin', mine explorin', saloon showdown glory. The only things it didn't have were a train robbery and and a Yakima Canutt stagecoach stunt.

I enjoyed it. Especially as I've been thinking about westerns a lot lately.

It usually bugs me when shows integrate work into the character's normal lives. E.g., investigating a murder during their wedding or honeymoon. But this episode was just so much fun I could ignore that. In fact, I thought this had a classic Castle feel to it.

I'm not sure how this is any more Shark Jumpy than steam punk, an invisibility suit, time travel, a sci fi convention, film noir, or an alternate universe. By that standard the wild west was rather tame. :)

The more I think about it, I realized I have a lot easier time accepting Castle concept episodes than the outrageously high stakes, "homicide detective saves the world" episodes. A dirty bomb in Manhattan, bringing down a high ranking CIA agent who is a Russian sleeper from the Cold War, international kidnapping, a senator leading a money laundering scheme and a crime ring that murders cops.

What I didnt like here, or the past few seasons, is how much Castle has lost his smooth, playboy persona and had it replaced with a goofy Barney Fife clumsiness. We know he can handle a gun. There's no way S1 Castle bobbles the six shooter. There had to be a showdown, but there were better ways to handle it.

You know what I hate about that TV show? The two main characters are now married, but they still call each other by their last name.

Yeah, it was a cute episode, and even if I guessed the whole "buried treasure" plot about 10 minutes in, they were having enough fun with the whole thing to sell it.

Totally agree with 2ht about how Castle's gradually turned into purely klutzy comic relief though. I thought for sure when Castle sat down at the poker table they'd at least reference the fact that's he's been established to be an excellent poker player, but nope. Castle didn't really get to show off any skills, just his childlike enthusiasm.

That bugs my S.O. to no end, but I let it slide. When you call someone by a name for years you just get used to it and it's hard to change. I knew a few military couples that would do the same thing.

Where the hell was my firefly reference? Western episode of Castle, and I did not notice any. I know they couldn't have him wear the outfit AGAIN, but I thought I would catch some nod or another.

Admittedly I don't pay all that much attention when I watch this show.
