Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens: Pilot
January 22, 2020 8:36 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe
Nora takes her first steps toward financial independence, trying her hand at a couple of jobs in an attempt to move out of her dad's house. (Comedy Central, US broadcast)
Indiewire Review: Comedy Central Series Is as Awkward as Its Title - Lacking narrative consistency and the storytelling savvy to deliver chaotic laughs, Awkwafina's TV debut is a bit of a mess.
Variety review: "“Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” rises or falls on its star’s charisma. Thankfully, she has plenty to spare. The series is hardly the first to lend itself to comparisons to “Broad City,” but it’s a rare case in which the comparisons are accurate — starting with its leveraging its star’s inherent likability in order to tell a story of amiable aimlessness among young New Yorkers. That helps carry over the line some of the show’s less successful writing; even baggily paced or confusing episodes represent time spent with a performer we crave more of."

Hollywood Reporter - After stealing scenes in 'Crazy Rich Asians' and garnering awards buzz in 'The Farewell,' Awkwafina gets a semi-autobiographical Comedy Central series.

All I know about this show is that it's been driving my friends on the 7 train insane, because Awkwafina recorded a set of special station announcements as a promo. It's the first time the MTA has done such a thing and the backlash is such that it might be the last.

Watched this yesterday. I love Awkwafina in all her previous roles, as well as in interviews and such. She is definitely the best thing in this series, too bad that the rest of it is a total mess - worse than Norah's bedroom even. I'll probably watch a few more episodes, just to see more of her and in the hopes that it settles down a bit.

I was really apprehensive about this, but after watching (only the pilot), I'm feeling a bit of kinship with it.
I'm conflicted about Awkwafina, but Lori Tan Chinn (Chang in 'OitNB') as cool grandma and BD Wong (in all the best things) as the assimilated dad feel like a really good support for Awk to explore doing her thing.
Chinn is the best.
Lower economic class Asians have been a non-entity in Western media.
